Macaques help themselves to water at hiking trail rest stops

2025-09-02

On Kaohsiung’s Shoushan Mountain, volunteers carry large buckets of water to rest areas for hikers to stop for a drink. But it’s not only people that get thirsty up in the mountains. Monkeys also drink from these water containers! One hiker shot a video of macaques crowding around the containers, jumping up and down, trying to figure out how to open its spout.

Four macaques crowd around water containers at a rest stop on Kaohsiung’s Shoushan Mountain, hoping for a refreshing drink.

Hiker
Monkeys can open the spout. I’ve seen it before. After opening it, they let the water drip and then lick it.

Lin Mei-yin
Macaque expert
Shoushan already has a lot of human-made facilities. When monkeys see these water containers that people carry to the rest stops, of course they’re going to try and open them.

Green notices are posted on the containers reminding hikers to tightly close the spout and cover it with a sleeve after use. This is meant to prevent macaques from sneaking a drink. But the clever monkeys still managed to crack this safeguard.

Lin Mei-yin
Macaque expert
In the past, hikers would put small padlocks on the containers to prevent macaques from opening them. But they might just want a drink or to play.

Volunteer
It’s due to human behavior most of the time. A lot of people will just close the spout haphazardly after using it.

The volunteer explained that the spouts have plastic covers to keep them sanitary so that hikers can have clean drinking water. There are three rest stops along Shoushan’s hiking trails, each equipped with water containers carried up the mountain by volunteers. Here, thirsty hikers can find a drink, but they may have to wait in line behind some playful monkeys.
