Olympian Lin Yu-ting releases memoir about overcoming adversity

2025-09-02

Lin Yu-ting became the first Taiwanese to win Olympic gold for boxing last year in Paris. She also became the target of much online abuse regarding her eligibility to compete in the event. Critics claimed that she was transgender or that she was actually a man, based on her appearance. She’s now written a memoir describing her life, from childhood onwards. At her book launch, she became tearful and emotional at the mention of her beloved coach Tseng Tzu-chiang, who said that Lin’s success was owing to hard work and didn’t happen miraculously.

Lin Yu-ting became the first Taiwanese boxer to win gold at the Olympics in Paris last year. She also had to deal with online abuse over questions about her gender. Now she’s written a book about all her experiences.

Lin Yu-ting
Olympic gold medalist
Looking back at that time now, I think: Wow! It really wasn’t easy for me to persevere and go forward to where I am today. Whether it is the pain from training, or the lows I experienced, I want to use these stories and share them with everyone.

At the launch of her new book, Lin thanked herself for not giving up along the way. When she talked about her coach, Tseng Tzu-chiang, her eyes inadvertently filled with tears.

Olympic gold medalist
Look at how much effort my coach has put in to train me and get me on the world stage, whether it’s sponsorship, training me or even low-key asking people for resources, I’ve seen it all.

Behind Lin’s gold medal were not just tactics and psychological struggles, but also her coach’s unwavering trust. Tseng also said Lin wasn’t just relying on miracles to reach the position she has.

Her hard work earned her a perfect 5-0 record in her four matches at the Olympics, where she won a gold medal.

Overcoming her opponents and also overcoming gossip, lies and slander, Lin’s book is not just about winning Olympic gold, but also about her realization that she should never give up on her goals, no matter how painful the setback.
