Former KMT Chair Hung Hsiu-chu has arrived in Beijing for a highly controversial trip, to attend a Chinese military parade on Sept. 3. Hung has attempted to justify her presence, saying that the ROC only exists today thanks to the cooperation between the Chinese Communist Party and the KMT. The KMT has further tried to defend the trip, calling the military parade a form of peaceful cross-strait exchanges. As expected, the DPP has slammed the visit, saying the weapons that will be on show are meant to threaten the people of Taiwan. The Mainland Affairs Council says Hung could face legal consequences if she were to assist in Chinese political propaganda. Let’s hear more.
Voice of Ho Ying-lu
KMT Central Standing Committee
I’m already here. Taking part in this event is a form of peaceful cross strait exchanges. We’re family after all, right?
Wang Ting-yu
Lawmaker (DPP)
The People’s Liberation Army uses those very weapons to threaten our people. Yet you’re going over there and condoning this military parade that’s meant as a threat to Taiwan’s 23 million people. What a stab in the back for Taiwan.
Lai Jui-lung
Lawmaker (DPP)
Ten years ago, when Hung Hsiu-chu was running for president, she vehemently opposed Lien Chan’s participation in the Sept. 3 military parade. But 10 years later, she herself is going to attend. What a hypocrite. It’s a slap in the face to the KMT and Eric Chu.
Shen Yu-chung
Mainland Affairs Council
Endorsing China’s calls to eliminate the ROC’s sovereignty, crossing the red line and advocating for the use of force to resolve political issues, saying things like “Taiwan is just a province,” or “the ROC doesn’t exist,” taking part in military exercises like the Joint Sword 2024. All these are actions that clearly align with the CCP’s agenda for collaboration between the military, government and politicians.
The Mainland Affairs Council says that the rules apply to everyone, not just people holding public office. Anyone who cooperates with Beijing to spread pro-unification or military propaganda will face investigation and potentially sanctioned. Every case will be evaluated independently to determine whether Taiwan’s national interests have been harmed.
