Central Taiwan opens first international yacht marina

Central Taiwan recently opened its first wharf dedicated to high-end yachts from around the world, gaining considerable international acclaim. Visitors will be treated to views of luxurious boats, some worth as much as NT$200 million.

A yacht club recently invested NT$1 billion in the Port of Taichung to build central Taiwan’s first large-scale marina for luxury boats. Now officially open, the wharf has already welcomed many valuable vessels. The global high-end yacht industry is worth over US$10 billion. Taiwanese businesses are throwing themselves into the market, hoping to make a name for themselves through customization and a competitive international marina.

Taichung has a huge consumer market. Taichung is where the most sports cars are sold. We’re optimistic about Taichung’s location and consumer potential, so we built a yacht marina here. It shows people here that since the city has a marina, they can buy a yacht. It makes this marina into Taiwan’s only exhibition and sales center for yachts.

The club organized a yacht “carnival,” gathering over 40 high-end brands from Taiwan and abroad to display their luxury boats. Nearby are the Gaomei Wetlands, shopping centers, and other attractions, creating a full suite of attractions near the Port of Taichung.

The completion of the marina and opening of the carnival is a declaration that the diverse seaside recreational zone that central Taiwan has been looking forward to for years is finally here.

The club will also build a yacht exhibition and sales center, integrating nearby attractions to extend Taichung’s “blue highway” beyond the sea for boating enthusiasts worldwide.

Yuann appeared delighted by the encounter and posed for pictures with Hung.

Hung was described as “the KMT representative” by Chinese state media CCTV. However, the KMT leadership back home emphasized that Hung is no longer a party official, and also refuted Beijing’s rhetoric on the war.

Back when Hung was the KMT chair, she criticized her predecessor and ex-Premier Lien Chan for attending Beijing’s military parade and said the action hurts the feelings of people in Taiwan. Ten years later, she seems to have completely changed her view on the issue.

Taiwan airlines partner with US airlines to expand North American destinations

As worldwide travel surges in the post-pandemic era, airlines are looking to expand their routes and break into different markets. For the US market, China Airlines, EVA Air, and Starlux Airlines have partnered with local airlines to coordinate transfers and extend their reach within North America. As domestic and foreign airlines sign new agreements, business opportunities continue to increase.

This is a direct look at one of the largest domestic airlines in the US, Southwest, at its headquarters in Dallas. Behind me in this cavernous hall is an entire row of what look like flying saucers, which are all Boeing 737 flight simulators.

One Boeing 737 simulator costs around NT$500 million, and there are 26 of them at Southwest Airlines’ headquarters. Southwest has the largest collection of these simulators and the largest fleet of 737s, with 809 of the aircraft flying to 104 destinations in the US. Now Southwest is partnering with China Airlines to expand into Asia.

It’s important that we pick partners that can serve the geographies that we cannot, Asia as an example. Southwest brings nearly 140 million customers a year. China Airlines provides, I believe it’s 191 destinations that you serve.

As travel demand has surged after the pandemic, airlines are developing new partnerships to expand business opportunities and serve more destinations. Through their partnership, Southwest and China Airlines will offer travelers single-ticket service between hundreds of destinations in the US and East Asia, allowing them to check their luggage through to their final destination, select seats, and transfer without hassle.

Southwest Airlines is the best airline for domestic connections within the US. Phoenix, which we recently started flying to, is also a very important hub for Southwest. Travelers could fly Southwest domestic flights to Phoenix and then transfer to our flights to Taiwan.

Currently, passengers transferring within the US to inland destinations make up about 10% of our North American travelers. Looking at the overall market, we could still grow by another 10%, which would mean doubling the number.

According to China Airlines, 15 to 20% of travelers flying from Taiwan to the US transfer to other North American destinations. In addition, 50 to 60% of travelers flying from the US to Taiwan are transferring to Southeast Asia.

The North American market offers huge opportunities. Not only has China Airlines partnered with Southwest, but Starlux has teamed up with Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. EVA Air chose to codeshare with Star Alliance members to expand its routes. Through international partnerships, airlines can offer travelers single-ticket service to destinations around the world, making the post-pandemic world even more interconnected.

Men blasted for starting gasoline fire on busy road to test extinguishers

While it’s a good idea to test your fire extinguishers, there is a proper way to do so that does not involve starting a fire on the side of a busy street. That’s exactly what two men did recently, setting a puddle of gasoline on fire to test their extinguishers. Though the pair seemed pleased about their fire safety awareness, they have been blasted online for their recklessness.

You usually do tests like these by putting gasoline and water at a certain ratio inside a metal container. You also get some other extinguishing tools at the ready in case you need them. You wouldn’t just rely on that one fire extinguisher.

Legally, testing of fire equipment must be carried out at specially designated sites to prevent accidents.

You have to do that at a place that complies with regulations. Our fire extinguishers all have a laser label, and they undergo safety inspections by the relevant agency, which in this case is a foundation. They do the tests at a specific test site.

If there were any methane gas seeping out from the drain, it could keep the fire lit even after it is sprayed, making for a very powerful and dangerous blaze.

According to the Highway Act, unauthorized use or destruction of public highways can result in fines of up to NT$300,000. Authorities may also require repairs within a specified timeframe, reimbursement of repair costs or compensation.

Hokkien human rights film screenings held at the CKS Memorial Hall

Film buffs, take note! The Taiwan International Human Rights Film Festival will be held from Sept. 19 to Oct. 12. Prior to that, 18 Taiwanese-language films that explore human rights will be shown at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. FTV reporter Stephany Yang has the details!

A total of 18 films in Taiwanese will be screened, including 15 feature films, 2 documentaries, and 1 animated film. Works include "Super Citizen Ko" directed by Wan Jen, "A Drifting Life" directed by Lin Cheng-sheng and "Sacred Forest” directed by Ke Chin-yuan. These films examine Taiwan’s democratization, environment and human rights development since 1959.

This film delves into Taiwan’s forest landscapes, weaving together past and present through a philosophical lens that examines the bond between humans and nature. It highlights three of Taiwan’s most distinctive forest ecosystems, inviting viewers to rethink how these lands protect both people and the environment. The event also encourages deeper reflection. Aside from movie screenings, a series of pre-screening introductions and post-screening discussions will also be held.

Even today, Taiwanese-language films from the 1960s through to 2025 remain incredibly precious. Among the films is one by Wan Jen. His 1996 film "Super Citizen Ko" was the first to discuss Taiwan’s White Terror era.

People who are interested can visit the official event page for updates on the film list and schedules. A total of 18 Taiwanese-language films will be screened across 34 sessions at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Auditorium until Oct. 31.

Tesla owner runs cable over sidewalk and scooters to charge

In New Taipei City’s Banqiao District, one resident has put up an extension cord from their home, crossing the sidewalk and over scooters in order to charge their Tesla parked on the side of the road. The cable would hang in midair, making it difficult for pedestrians to pass. After someone complained online, other netizens commented that they have often seen the car parked on the yellow line and charging after 9pm, which is against the law.

Someone was about to pull out their scooter and drive home, only to find a long wire sitting on top of it.

This long black cable is coming from a first-floor resident’s home, stretching across the sidewalk and over several scooters, until finally reaching a Tesla parked on the side of the road.

The cord was running from a resident’s home to the street, stretching seven or eight meters and hanging on top of scooters. But the neighbors didn’t seem surprised.

He parks his car on the yellow line. He pulls the cable out and it plugs in over there. If the cops come, he takes it back and drives off, then comes back around and keeps charging.

A long cable stretched out at night like this is not only illegal, but dangerous to pedestrians and the car itself.

The main concern is that if a pedestrian or scooter passes by and pulls the cable loose, it could damage the charger itself.

Our precinct has not received any public reports of someone running a charging cable from their home out to the roadside for charging. But behavior like this violates the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act and is subject to a fine of NT$1,200 to NT$2,400.

The Tesla owner likely charges their vehicle this way for convenience. Getting a ticket may not be a big deal, but the danger the extension cord poses to passing pedestrians and scooters is very real.

Student rejected by 5 med schools gets accepted on second try

A straight-A student from Taichung who got a stunning 74 out of 75 in the university entrance exam was rejected from five med schools earlier this year. It turns out, the problem was not with his exam scores, but with his other application documents. One of the documents claimed that he had won "Best Debater" at a competition, but that wasn’t the case. After the brutal rejection, he decided to apply once again through a different channel that only takes exam scores into consideration. Well, he got accepted at National Cheng Kung University’s med school and is now sharing his experience.

It’s true that I did something wrong. If I had a choice, I would write the title of the certificate properly, that way there wouldn’t be such a problem.

This high school student got an excellent score of 74 out of 75 for the first round of university entrance exams this year. But five med schools withdrew their acceptance due to an issue with his other application documents.

It was one withdrawal after another from each school. By then I knew that it’s over, that it was probably over for me. The first thought I had was to retake the exam, which was only 35 days away. The first and second round of exams differ by about 16 textbooks’ worth of contents. My mom said to me back then, “You’ve already taken the exam once, how difficult will it be to do it again?” So I was back at it already, right from the start.

He decided right there and then to focus on the second round of exams, which only takes into account the scores of the exam for acceptance. He then used his experience to encourage other highschoolers to have confidence in their own abilities. He also explained his motivation for sharing his application document online in the first place.

It’s very difficult to find any med school application document from successful applicants over the years. Instead, you only get flyers from cram schools. So by posting the documents, I thought I’d be able to help more younger peers. The documents have their own intrinsic value.

The withdrawals roughly coincided with the graduation ceremony. I asked my now-girlfriend to be in a relationship with me on the day of the graduation ceremony. So the day we got together made it easy to see how many days have passed between the two events, which was 35 days. I think it’s just that the universe wanted to challenge me to really learn my high school studies, so it put me back into the second round of exams. So I thought, fine, so be it, I’ll retake the exams.

Now that a medical school has to accept him anyway based on his exam score, Yang appears to believe that he has the last laugh—at least for now.
