
As worldwide travel surges in the post-pandemic era, airlines are looking to expand their routes and break into different markets. For the US market, China Airlines, EVA Air, and Starlux Airlines have partnered with local airlines to coordinate transfers and extend their reach within North America. As domestic and foreign airlines sign new agreements, business opportunities continue to increase.

This is a direct look at one of the largest domestic airlines in the US, Southwest, at its headquarters in Dallas. Behind me in this cavernous hall is an entire row of what look like flying saucers, which are all Boeing 737 flight simulators.
One Boeing 737 simulator costs around NT$500 million, and there are 26 of them at Southwest Airlines’ headquarters. Southwest has the largest collection of these simulators and the largest fleet of 737s, with 809 of the aircraft flying to 104 destinations in the US. Now Southwest is partnering with China Airlines to expand into Asia.

It’s important that we pick partners that can serve the geographies that we cannot, Asia as an example. Southwest brings nearly 140 million customers a year. China Airlines provides, I believe it’s 191 destinations that you serve.
As travel demand has surged after the pandemic, airlines are developing new partnerships to expand business opportunities and serve more destinations. Through their partnership, Southwest and China Airlines will offer travelers single-ticket service between hundreds of destinations in the US and East Asia, allowing them to check their luggage through to their final destination, select seats, and transfer without hassle.

Southwest Airlines is the best airline for domestic connections within the US. Phoenix, which we recently started flying to, is also a very important hub for Southwest. Travelers could fly Southwest domestic flights to Phoenix and then transfer to our flights to Taiwan.

Currently, passengers transferring within the US to inland destinations make up about 10% of our North American travelers. Looking at the overall market, we could still grow by another 10%, which would mean doubling the number.
According to China Airlines, 15 to 20% of travelers flying from Taiwan to the US transfer to other North American destinations. In addition, 50 to 60% of travelers flying from the US to Taiwan are transferring to Southeast Asia.
The North American market offers huge opportunities. Not only has China Airlines partnered with Southwest, but Starlux has teamed up with Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. EVA Air chose to codeshare with Star Alliance members to expand its routes. Through international partnerships, airlines can offer travelers single-ticket service to destinations around the world, making the post-pandemic world even more interconnected.

737模擬艙,單一造價達5億台幣,西南航空總部就有26個,規模達全球之最。之所以要這麼多的模擬艙,都是因為,西南航空有全世界最大的737機隊,809架飛、飛往104個美國航點。現在這間美國國內線,載客量最大的航空公司,將要攜手華航,開拓亞洲市場。

“選擇一個能夠服務到我們無法抵達的地方的合作夥伴,是很重要的,亞洲是一個例子。西南航空一年有1.4億名乘客,而華航在全世界有191個航點。”
疫後全球旅運需求暢旺,但航太供應鏈還沒恢復。航空公司想搶商機、開航點,找人合作,一人飛一段,似乎是個不錯的主意。西南航空攜手華航,一本票,讓旅客行李直掛,優先選位,無痛轉機,串連東亞及美國百座城市。

“西南航空他基本上是美國內陸接轉最強大的航空公司。近期所開的鳳凰城,也是西南航空非常重要的口岸。(期盼旅客)搭乘西南航空國內線,來到鳳凰城,再搭乘我們的航班來到台灣。”

“目前大概是美國轉機到內陸的(旅客數)部分,大概是(北美旅客數的)10%左右。
照整個市場來看,我們還可以增加10% 就是翻倍。”
華航統計,台灣飛美旅客,有15-20%會轉往內陸、從美國飛回來的乘客,則有50-60%會轉往東南亞。
北美轉機市場,商機之大,不只華航攜手西南航空,星宇也和阿拉斯加航空、美國航空聯營。長榮則是選擇和星空聯盟成員共掛班號,擴大航線營運。世界之大,航空公司到得了的地方,布點執飛;暫時到不了的,透過合作,讓別人幫飛,成了疫後航線佈局新趨勢。
