Another elevator scare at Top City Taichung has put shoppers on edge. On Sunday evening, four people were trapped inside a lift for 40 minutes, just two weeks after similar incidents left 19 others stuck. This marks the third malfunction in two weeks, despite a full inspection of all 12 elevators just last month. The mall has apologized and promised deeper investigations, but concerns over safety continue to rise.

Two similar incidents happened in August. One time, 19 people were left shut in the lift for 1 hour between the second and third floors. Though a complete inspection was later conducted, another shutdown left four people stuck inside for 40 minutes. With three breakdowns in two weeks, some shoppers are worried about their safety.

In the latest entrapment, the lift was going down to the underground car park when the doors made a loud noise on the first floor. Upon reaching the basement level, they wouldn’t open. The city government says the lift will be out of service for now. After an inspection and repairs, a third party will be brought in for an inspection. A total of 23 people have been stuck in the lifts in three malfunctions over two weeks.

台中大遠百週日又發生電梯關人受困案件！4位民眾被困40分鐘，而且8月23、24日才發生電梯2度關人事件，事後全館電梯全面進行檢修，九月初開放使用，沒想到，在短短兩週，又有另一台電梯出問題。

幾名人員，拿著工具，合力試圖撬開電梯門，這是星期天傍晚，台中大遠百又發生電梯受困。

大遠百在8月就發生2起電梯故障案件，其中一次有19位民眾，卡在2樓、3樓中間長達1小時，事發後已經全面進行檢修，沒想到9/7傍晚，又因為電梯門打不開，4位民眾受困地下一樓40分鐘，2週內3起，多次故障，實在令人不安。

整棟百貨，全館12部電梯，8月底才全面檢修完畢，沒想到9月初又傳出故障，業者在事後立即向受困民眾致歉，並給予慰問金，也表示會對電梯再做一次更全面的檢查。

“昨天(7日)又突然有這樣的一個狀況，所以後續電梯還會再請電梯廠商，再做進一步的了解，到底問題狀況是出現在哪裡。”

民眾本來要到地下停車場取車，電梯在一樓關門時有發生碰撞巨響，到了地下一樓，不明原因，門就打不開。市府都發局表示，暫時禁止故障電梯繼續使用，檢修後，將請第三方機構，到現場進行檢查，2個禮拜以來，故障3次，一共23人受困。

He said investigations found no financial flows. This is a complete lie. If you’ve read the court records, you’ll know that Ko Wen-je’s lying again.

Ko holds that he’s being trialed unfairly, but not everyone is buying it. Ko also insists that the president, Lai Ching-te is behind this so-called political persecution against him.

Restaurant defends rejection of NT$1 coins after uproar

A diner in Kaohsiung recently criticized a duck restaurant for refusing to take five NT$1 coins when he paid for his meal, insisting that they are still legal tender and should have been accepted. The restaurant responded, saying that they sometimes get customers who pay with 20 or 30 of the coins at a time. Since it’s time-consuming to go change them at the bank when they stack up, they no longer accept NT$1 coins. But the restaurant insisted they never intended to cause any trouble.

Chopped into large glistening pieces, the duck at this restaurant certainly looks enticing. But a customer recently took to the internet to complain about it, after the owner refused to accept five NT$1 coins when he was paying for his meal.

Most of the commenters said that the NT$1 coin is still legal tender, and should be accepted. But the owner of the restaurant explained that he sometimes gets customers who pay with 20 or 30 of them at a time. Dealing with that much change is troublesome, so they decided to put up a notice that they’d no longer accept NT$1 coins.

When we accept so many NT$1 coins, it will quickly add up to an entire bag, a large bag that we have to take to the bank to change. Lots of people go to change their money, so we have to line up for a long time. That’s why we just decided not to accept them anymore.

Although they posted a notice, other restaurant owners say you should expect to receive change in the course of doing business. Since NT$5, NT$10, and NT$50 are all coins as well, they say that taking them all to the bank at once to exchange or deposit isn’t that big of a deal.

Diners praise Changhua oysters for chewy texture, freshness

Recent typhoons and heavy rains have even affected the oyster industry, making them smaller while also driving up costs by 150%. The northeast monsoon strengthens after the holiday, and the size of oysters will be affected by the changing weather.

Masses of clams on Budai beach draw amateur clammers

The Haomei Village beach in Chiayi’s Budai Township has seen scores of wild hardshell clams appear along the shore in recent days, enticing almost as many visitors to go digging for their dinner. Some parents are even bringing their kids to experience wading into the shallows for clams, creating a memorable experience for everyone.

Dozens of people are spread out on a beach, but they’re not here to play in the water. If you look closely, some are holding special tools or have a net or basket strapped around their waist. It all looks very professional.

This person drags a cage-like tool along the sand, gripping the vertical pole as they pull it out into the ocean. Once they’ve dredged up the sand, they stand and shake the pole. After it’s washed by the waves, only clams will be left. Their bag is full after just a few rounds.

We’ve come three times. We’ve gotten clams each time and sell them.

This beach is in Haomei Village in Chiayi’s Budai Township. Lately, tons of wild clams have appeared along the shore. Hearing the news, people from near and far have come to try their hand at clamming. Some people use small rakes and others use shovels. You can even dig with your bare hands.

“Wow, you can really dig anywhere, huh?
Yeah. It’s amazing.
Will you eat or sell them?
Eat.
So you don’t need any tools to get them.
That’s right.

Many parents also brought their kids to come experience clamming in the shallows. They certainly had a blast.

There’s a huge sense of accomplishment. A friend told me about it. He came before and said it was pretty nice. The clams are also easy for kids to find.

The chance to dig for buried treasure while staying cool has made this beach in the sleepy hamlet of Haomei a hot destination.

Hsinchu eatery praised for generously portioned noodles

An eatery in Hsinchu’s Hukou Township has gotten attention recently for serving a bowl of noodles that’s as big as three ordinary portions. If you actually weigh it, these “master” noodles come in at over 1kg! The owner chose the name “master noodles” to encourage people to take charge of their lives. He also keeps the price low to make sure everyone can eat their fill. Even better, if you can finish two at once, he’ll only charge you for one.

Glistening noodles boil in roiling water before they’re strained into a huge bowl. Fragrant oil and healthy helpings of bean sprouts and bok choy go on first, before it’s topped off with minced meat and fried shallots.

Weighed on a scale, you can see that this massive bowl is heavier than 1kg. It looks to be at least three times bigger than this regular bowl of noodles. This local eatery in Hsinchu’s Hukou Township is promoting their bowl of Hakka-style “master” noodles, sold at a generous price. Many people have come to try it out.

Ngayaw Ake’ of Wei Chuan Dragons bids grand farewell

Ngayaw Ake’ of Wei Chuan Dragons played his farewell games against the TSG Hawks over the weekend, after announcing his retirement earlier, on March 31. On Sunday, during his final game, he made a record-breaking 305th home run in his career, and won 11-0 against the TSG Hawks. Despite the grand exit, his time in baseball is far from over. He’ll stay on the Wei Chuan Dragons as a coach and nurture the next generation of baseball stars.

It’s a full house with up to 40,000 baseball fans at the last of Ngayaw Ake’s farewell games. On this day, he hit his 305th home run, making a grand exit after an illustrious career.

The farewell ceremony had pop star Richie Jen sing his 2001 hit song, which later became one of Taiwan’s unofficial baseball anthems. For 22 years, Ngayaw Ake’ has put on many stunning performances to spectators.

He’s also greeted by his La New Bears co-headliner Shih Chih-wei. He almost chokes on tears of joy while giving his farewell speech.

Even the president, a self-proclaimed baseball fan, made a social media post to congratulate Ngayaw Ake’. He’s also noted for being the first-ever CPBL player to achieve 1,000 runs batted in, 1,000 scores and 300 homeruns, as well as for representing the country over the years.
