Student says she was ‘almost decapitated’ by dorm ceiling fan

2025-09-08

A student in Tainan says she was almost decapitated in her dorm room, after getting gashed by the ceiling fan near her bunk bed. The student sleeps on the upper bunk of the bed, which is within reach of the fan. She apparently stretched out her arm and got sliced by the blades, leaving her bleeding in bed. Other students at the university say they have previously been struck by the fans as well, and some report being afraid to even sleep at night. Let’s hear from them.

Student
Also got hit by ceiling fan
It hurt a lot. I was struck on my forehead in my first year.

Student
Is afraid of ceiling fan
You can see it spinning super fast. I’m afraid of getting cut. One side is so close to the fan that if you stretch out your hand you can touch it, even if you’re not tall.

Student
Finds fans dangerous
I’m concerned about the hazard that fans pose. Living there, you think of when something dangerous is going to happen. If you sit up, you could get hit. After you turn off the lights at night, you can’t tell where the fan is, so you could hurt yourself if you sit up.

Ko Kai-yin
University secretary
We’re dealing with the room that had the accident first. And then we’ll go for the rooms that have similar issues in the 4th Women’s Dormitory and the men’s dorms. We’ll swap out the open ceiling fans for ones with covers that are safer.

The university says it will change out the ceiling fans for safer models to avoid any further accidents. But concerns remain that the new fans will still be dangerously close to the beds anyway. If they fall of or other mishaps happen, it could still result in a painful night’s sleep.
