Semicon Taiwan’s show section opened on Wednesday at Nangang Exhibition Center. The Ministry of Economic Affairs has set up the “MOEA TECH HUB,” showcasing 37 cutting-edge technologies developed by ITRI and industry partners. Highlights included an optics engine with the highest-level specifications at present. Let’s take a look.

The “MOEA TECH HUB” is now open at Semicon Taiwan. It’s a pavilion by the Ministry of Economic Affairs showcasing 37 cutting-edge technologies, including silicon photonics devices, jointly developed by ITRI and industry partners.

Silicon photonics is an indispensable part of AI computing. The optical engine is the most crucial part of the technology. This is Taiwan’s first-ever, fastest, 1.6Tbps optical engine. It can transmit around 40 high-definition videos every second.

ITRI has successfully developed Taiwan’s first-ever 1.6Tbps silicon photonics optical engine module, the specifications of which are on par with the most advanced models internationally. The device integrates high-density components onto a tiny silicon photonics chip, which reduces power consumption while optimizing performance and lowering latency. This allows data centers to solve data transmission bottlenecks.

With industry participation, we were able to more fully deploy optical photonics technology. ASE of course is tasked with packaging and testing. We have a partner in the world’s largest fab, which is our very own TSMC. With a more productive partnership, we’ll be able to roll out all our technologies.

ITRI and ASE developed an open silicon photonics semiconductor platform, offering a one-stop solution from design, production and integration, all the way to packaging and testing.

A camera lens embedded in the train model captures video footage in real time. It’s thanks to this chip module. In the past, this device would be around the size of a credit card, but now it’s smaller than a NT$1 coin. This is the world’s first-ever 3-D customizable universal chip module that can be applied onto wearable devices and unmanned vehicles in the future.

Miniaturized, wireless, low-latency image transmission has always been a major challenge in the industry. It’s a very complex technology that must take into consideration, power consumption and low transmission latency, but it appears to be very effective. Japan’s rail transit system has adopted it and it has also successfully entered mass production after a year of development.

The new technologies are not only better, their development periods were also shorter. What would have taken more than half a year in the past now only takes 12 weeks, and with the resulting device much smaller too. Semicon Taiwan’s exhibition offers the perfect platform to showcase the innovations to international buyers.

國際半導體展在南港展覽館登場,經濟部科技研發主題館也展示37項技術,像是"3D客製化晶片通用模組"能縮短開發時間,體積更小但功能更完整。另外,現場也展示"矽光子 光引擎模組",效能已經跟上國際標準,未來能應用在資料中心和高效能運算。

"經濟部科技研發主題館"在SEMICON Taiwan盛大開幕,展示工研院與產業界合作的37項前瞻技術,其中就包含時下最夯的矽光子。

“矽光子是未來在AI運算不可或缺的一部分。其中光引擎是它最核心的部分,台灣首次最快的,1.6Tbps的光引擎,它大概每秒鐘,可以傳40部高畫質的影片。”

工研院成功開發,國內第一款1.6T矽光子光引擎模組,達到國際標準。把高密度元件設計,整合在小小的矽光晶片上,有低功耗、低延遲和高頻寬3大特性,解決資料中心傳出資料的瓶頸。

“業界一起參與下,我們能夠把矽光子,整個的技術發展,做更完整的佈局,日月光當然是從封測的角色,當然搭配全世界最大的Fab,我們現在的台積電,我們做更好的合作,能夠把所有的技術開展出來。”

工研院與日月光串聯,打造"矽光半導體開放式平台",從一開始的設計、製造、整合到封測,有一站式服務。

模型火車上的鏡頭,即時傳回畫面,靠的就是這晶片模組,過去是一張信用卡的大小,現在縮小到一元硬幣。全球首創的"3D客製化晶片通用模組",未來也可以應用到穿戴裝置和無人機。

“微型化的,無線低延遲的影像傳輸,這一塊一直在業界,都是非常缺乏的,要考慮到電量跟傳輸的低延遲,它其實是一個非常複雜,但是看起來是,非常有成效的一個技術。日本的軌道交通,他們看起來,經過一年的磨合之後,也順利進到量產。”

新技術大幅縮短開發時程,原本半年以上,現在只要12週,體積還更小。在半導體展上曝光,也希望能吸引更多國際廠商的目光。
