Taiwan’s National Palace Museum is marking its 100th anniversary with a historic overseas exhibition, bringing iconic artifacts like the Jadeite Cabbage to Europe for the first time. But while the showcase is expected to draw crowds in Czechia, it’s also drawing fire from Beijing, which accuses Taiwan of politicizing Chinese culture.
In a historic move to celebrate its 100th anniversary, the National Palace Museum is holding an exhibition overseas. Its first stop was Czechia’s National Museum, marking the first time that the ever-popular Jadeite Cabbage is shown in Europe.
Michal Lukeš
National Museum Director
It’s the first time that we are displaying the Jadeite Cabbage. I’m sure it will attract a lot of attention, just like the Mona Lisa.
Among the 131 collection items on display are the painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival,” and curio cabinets that belonged to the emperor. But the exhibition of the treasures has drawn a strong reaction from China.
Chen Binhua
Taiwan Affairs Office
The DPP authorities, while aggressively pushing forward cultural Taiwan independence and pursuing desinicization, are at the same time shamelessly exploiting the treasures of Chinese civilization in a blatant attempt to advance their separatist agenda.
Liang Wen-chieh
Mainland Affairs Council
We weren’t the ones who did the Cultural Revolution, it was the Chinese Communist Party. They were the ones who were calling for the destruction of the “Four Olds:” old ideas, culture, customs and habits. It’s clear that the ones that tried to destroy Chinese culture were the CCP, not us.
The Director of the National Palace Museum, Hsiao Tsung-huang, also pushed back against China’s comments.
Hsiao Tsung-huang
National Palace Museum Director
The exhibition showcases our collections and highlights the essence of Chinese culture. There’s no desinicization happening, no disrespect to the artifacts. It’s purely a cultural exchange.
Johnny Chiang
Legislative Yuan Deputy Speaker
This is an important exhibition of Chinese culture in Czechia. We hope that the Beijing authorities can face the reality that we are the ones protecting and promoting Chinese culture. These are national treasures of the ROC, jewels of the Chinese civilization.
The National Palace Museum has a large collection of Chinese cultural artifacts that it’s now showing the world.
