If you’re looking for a cultural escape this fall, Miaoli has just the ticket. The Miaobei Arts Festival is back, and it’s bringing together Taiwan’s top symphony orchestras, world-class musicians, stunning exhibitions, and powerful theater performances. Whether you’re a classical music lover, an art enthusiast, or a fan of live drama, there’s something for everyone. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a sneak peek!

The Miaobei Arts Festival will showcase a series of concerts by the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, and National Symphony Orchestra.

This time, we are so grateful and happy to invite two great musicians to perform together. The conductor will be Andreas Ottensamer, an uplifting very important young conductor who used to be the principal clarinetist of the Berlin Philharmonic. The violinist we are going to present is William Wei, who is one of our best young violinists who just won the Queen Elisabeth violin Competition’s top prize. It is so exciting to see these two outstanding artists will be performing together with three outstanding repertoires. One is Mendelssohn, the best and most popular German violin Concerto, the Mendelssohn violin concerto, and American in Paris written by the American composer George Gershwin. This piece will combine perfectly both Jazz and classical languages.

And, if you are fan of art and theater, you can enjoy performances by the Godot Theatre Company. The arts festival is split into four themes, offering a variety of art exhibitions, concerts, and theater performances.

Miaobei has an excellent venue with great acoustics we’ve focused on music as the central theme. Since 2020, we’ve featured Taiwan’s three major symphony orchestras. Exhibitions are also a key part of the festival each year because it’s rare to find a venue that can present both visual and performing arts well together. That’s why we made exhibitions a fixed element of the arts festival. Music and exhibitions are essential every year, and since many people also love theater, we consistently include drama-related performances as well.

The Miaobei Arts Festival will take place at the Miaobei Art Center in Miaoli County from Oct.3 till Dec. 28.

“因為苗北有一個很好的場域，演奏廳的效果很好，所以當然在音樂的主軸上，希望從2020年就開始，定調在國內三個交響樂團，除了這個以外，每年展覽很重要，因為很少的場域是包括視覺跟表演都可以在共同呈現的，所以我們在藝術節也定調固定的展覽。展覽跟音樂是每年必要的，看戲的朋友也非常多，所以我們也是每年舉辦跟戲劇相關的”

2025苗北藝術節將從10月3日至12月28日在苗北藝文中心舉行。

The beginnings and golden age of pop music at the Taipei City Archives

If you are a music lover, here is a story you might be interested in! A new exhibition in Taipei invites visitors to go back in time to explore Taiwanese pop music history from the 1950s to the 1990s. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us down memory lane!

In the early days of Taiwan’s pop music scene, riverside music venues played a key role in local entertainment. The organizers of the exhibition have recreated a riverside concert to honor the roots of Taipei’s pop music.

Back in the 1950s, one of the earliest pop music scenes in Taipei emerged along the Tamsui River. It was the post-war era, and people had very little in the way of entertainment. So, by the riverside, open-air song stages began to appear. Business people would clear the grass near the riverbank, build stages, and invite performers to sing lyrics on stage.

In the 1960s, Western music became increasingly prominent in Taiwan, especially along Zhongshan North Road, due to the presence of American military bases.

In the 1960s, due to the Vietnam War, Taiwan became a place for US military to rest. During that time, American soldiers brought Western music to Taiwan. Many Taiwanese people enjoyed these songs and even formed their own bands. On Zhongshan North Road, there was the American Club and the Grand Hotel. The area was full of pubs and clubs, and everyone was listening to Western music.

Then, in the 1980s, cabaret shows and restaurant performances became popular. By the 1990s, underground rock bands began to emerge. This exhibit explores the rich history of pop music in Taiwan, showcasing iconic vinyl records, cassette tapes, and CDs.

Because we are music lovers also so basically, it is quite nostalgic because that is the music of our grandparents. Then, when we come here and visit, I think I can find some of the cassettes still in my house. We saw some score over there and then we learned a little bit. We know how to read the music score so we can sing along. It is quite fun for us.

Taiwan is a very important stepping stone in the development of pop music. We hope to showcase how deeply pop music has been rooted in the city of Taipei from the 1950s to the 1990s, from the songs people listened to, to the cityscape that was shaped by pop culture. This exhibition invites everyone into a space of shared memories — a journey through Taiwan’s pop music history. Here, you’ll see iconic albums that represent each era.

The exhibit is also holding a series of performances, documentary screenings, talks, and even a karaoke competition. The exhibit will be held at the Taipei City Archives until Oct. 19.

Taichung to host first-ever world fair for birdwatchers

Taiwan is host to an array of animal species, attracting many rare birds. Thanks to this diversity, Taichung was selected to host the first-ever World Bird Fair later this month. It will not only be an annual event for birdwatchers and conservationists, but will also be a stage on which Taiwan can showcase its rich ecology and vision for sustainable tourism to the world.

It promises to not only be an important meeting of birdwatchers and conservationists, but is also a stage on which Taiwan can showcase its rich ecology to visitors from more than 30 countries.

We can confirm that we’ve been planning this for about 16 months. From the outlying islands to the shore and at sea, it’s rare for such unique landscapes to breed so many bird species.

As it’s located on the Tropic of Cancer, Taiwan serves as a sort of “ark” for 32 endemic bird species. It’s also along the migratory corridor for birds in East Asia, ensuring that its diverse environments have become habitats for many rare birds. Author Liu Ka-shiang劉克襄, who has more than 40 years of birdwatching experience, said that with a pair of binoculars, new discoveries can be made everywhere you look.

Two-thirds of Taiwan’s central mountain range is forested. It’s all fantastic for birdwatching. Of course, there’s also the shore and outlying islands. Taiwan is a great place for birdwatchers.

Usually, the journey to good birdwatching spots is long and arduous. But in Taiwan, you get great value for your money.

Taiwan is home to 32 endemic bird species. On Daxueshan alone, you can find 31 of them. Most importantly, from the center of Taichung or the high-speed rail, it only takes two hours to get there.

There are tons of gray-faced buzzards and Chinese sparrowhawks at Kenting National Park. Every year, when the migratory species travel south for the winter, and when they return back north, there are lots and lots of birds.

Taijiang National Park has the most black-faced spoonbills of anywhere in the world. There are also special tours that cater to international birdwatchers, helping Taiwan to become a prime destination for avian enthusiasts.

Car thief returns to scene of crime after forgetting phone

A car owner early one morning discovered his vehicle had been stolen, and immediately reported it to police. But shortly after sunrise, the car was somehow back in its parking spot. Just as he was wondering if he had dreamed it all up, he saw a suspicious figure lurking nearby. It turns out that the thief returned the car after driving it around, thinking that no one would notice. But he was caught red-handed when he returned to retrieve the phone he left in the vehicle.

A man in white grasps a bicycle while backing up and gesturing with his other hand. After a moment, he drops the bike entirely to grapple with a man in blue.

The man in white throws out a kick, and the man in blue is temporarily taken aback as his family rushes out to help. Seeing he’s now outnumbered three to one, the first man goes off running. But the police had already been called and were there to take him away.

The man was put in cuffs and taken to the police station. He had taken advantage of a dark and stormy night to steal a car. The owner realized it was missing and reported it. But the thief had only taken it for a joyride, and returned it after a few hours. Just as the owner was wondering if it was all a dream, the story took a turn when the thief returned to the scene of the crime. It was all because he had forgotten his phone in the car.

What could have been grand theft auto turned into a comedy. The 34-year-old thief is notorious around Jiaoxi, Toucheng, and Yuanshan in Yilan County. In the first six months of this year alone, police have apprehended him five times. Although he’s always been picked up for minor crimes, he’s certainly becoming a headache for the local authorities.

New luxury car CEO attracts attention for his good looks

At just 37 years old, one handsome new CEO has been dubbed the “nation’s husband.” Dennis Lin recently took over leadership of a luxury car brand, drawing much attention for his charm, charisma, and good looks. Lin is a true son of Taiwan, having graduated from Taipei’s Chenggong High School before studying business administration at National Chengchi University.

An all-new auburn SUV rolls up to a car dealership, and out steps a handsome man in a classic black suit.

This is Dennis Lin, who recently took over leadership of a luxury car brand at just 37 years old. Born and raised in Taiwan, Lin studied business administration and advertising at National Chengchi University. His good looks have earned him praise as prime husband material, with some netizens even calling him the “nation’s husband.”

Jadeite Cabbage exhibited in Czechia in historic first

Taiwan’s National Palace Museum is marking its 100th anniversary with a historic overseas exhibition, bringing iconic artifacts like the Jadeite Cabbage to Europe for the first time. But while the showcase is expected to draw crowds in Czechia, it’s also drawing fire from Beijing, which accuses Taiwan of politicizing Chinese culture.

In a historic move to celebrate its 100th anniversary, the National Palace Museum is holding an exhibition overseas. Its first stop was Czechia’s National Museum, marking the first time that the ever-popular Jadeite Cabbage is shown in Europe.

ITRI signs collaboration agreement with UK National Physical Laboratory

Taiwan and the UK are deepening ties in high-tech research and development. Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute, or ITRI, has signed a new cooperation agreement with the UK’s National Physical Laboratory. The partnership aims to advance innovation in key fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and advanced materials, and pave the way for closer collaboration in global measurement standards and industrial technologies.

We’ve worked with National Physical Laboratory for many years. I think our ties with the UK are very close, and I hope that our standards laboratories can conduct further standards research in the field of semiconductors and advanced materials.

Amid the rapid evolution of technology and shifts in supply chains, ITRI was commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs to establish the National Measurement Laboratory and to boost international cooperation. In May, it established an office in the UK and on Sept. 11, it signed a collaboration agreement with the NPL. Both parties hope the agreement can build a foundation for further collaboration in measurement technology applied to areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence and key materials.
