Foundation holds joint wedding banquet for three elderly couples

In Minxiong, Chiayi, three elderly couples recently reiterated their love for each other in a grand wedding ceremony unlike any they had experienced before. Sponsored by the Huashan Social Welfare Foundation, the couples had the wedding of their dreams, complete with a banquet, red carpet, and photoshoot, expressing their enduring and unchanging love in a way they did not have the chance to in their youth.

Dressed in elegant red-and-gold wedding outfits, 81-year-old Yun-kai and 84-year-old Jui-chih enter the wedding banquet together.

The two have been together for 55 years, and this is their second wedding ceremony. As Jui-chih suffers from dementia, her husband Yun-kai decided they would get married again so that his wife could feel his unchanging love in the present.

Our older generation didn’t have any sort of wedding ceremony with a red carpet and photoshoot or anything like that, so this dream of ours has finally been fulfilled.

This grand wedding banquet included two other couples who have been together for decades, turning their dream wedding into a reality. The deep love between all three couples moved everyone in attendance.

We held an old-fashioned wedding for them, including traditions like stepping on tiles, passing over fire, and exchanging tokens, so they could truly experience a real wedding ceremony like they never had before.

In the past they might not have had a wedding, so the Huashan Foundation helped them realize this dream in the present, allowing older folks to feel our care for them.

An estimated 380,000 people currently suffer from dementia in Taiwan, a number that has gone up as the population ages. The Huashan Foundation helped seniors to stay in the present by holding a grand wedding banquet for three elderly couples, showing that love and romance are never-ending.

嘉義民雄日前舉辦一場遲來的婚禮，華山基金會，替其中兩對長輩一圓當年未實現的婚禮夢。另外81歲的雲開阿公跟84歲的瑞枝奶奶，則是再度舉辦婚禮，因奶奶被失智奪走記憶，阿公決定再娶奶奶一次，表達自己的愛，永遠不變。

兩人情牽55年，是第二回舉辦婚禮，但奶奶被失智奪走記憶後，忘了許多往事，阿公決定再舉辦一次婚禮，要讓奶奶，感受到他不變的愛。

“這次能夠為我們舉辦老人的婚禮，覺得華山基金會真的用心良苦，很感謝。”

“因為我們以前老一輩的，也都沒有說什麼結婚，走紅地毯拍婚紗照啊都沒有，所以這點願望都讓我們實現了。”

這場婚禮中，華山基金會也替另外兩對相守數十年的長輩，一圓當年未實現的婚禮夢，三對長輩真摯的愛情故事，讓現場民眾動容。

“讓他們遵循以前的傳統婚禮，我們其中有踩瓦，有過爐，還有一個交換信物的方式，然後讓他們可以真正去感受到，以前沒有過的一個真正的結婚儀式。”

“可能在以前的時間點，可能沒有做一個婚禮的舉行，那華山這邊在這個時間點，幫他們圓了這個夢，讓長輩可以感受，我們對長輩的一個關心。”

目前台灣推估已有超過38萬失智者，隨著人口高齡化，失智症是多數家庭需要面對的課題，華山基金會替三對長輩舉辦熱鬧婚禮，互相道愛，數十年來的承諾，終於換來最浪漫的兌現。

Taiwan’s white paper on dementia released

In time for World Alzheimer’s Day, Taiwan’s National Health Research Institutes announced the release of the "White Paper on Managing Risk Factors for Dementia." The initiative urges citizens to begin proactive prevention from age 40, identifying this stage as the “golden period” for intervention. FTV reporter Stephany Yang has the details.

Novo Nordisk, a global leader in the prevention and treatment of diabetes, obesity, and other chronic conditions, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Taiwan’s National Health Research Institutes and Kaohsiung Medical University. As part of this strategic collaboration, they also jointly released the "White Paper on Managing Risk Factors for Dementia," aiming to encourage early intervention and comprehensive risk management. Through this partnership, they hope to tackle pressing public health challenges, improve chronic disease management, and accelerate research efforts.

We started the collaboration last year in 2024. With the same mission in mind, if we are together to address the increasing public health burden of chronic diseases. That includes diabetes, obesity, and dementia, then we simply have to work together. I think that really is the recognition that the thing that can make the biggest difference is really early intervention and prefearbly prevention because that is where we can add the most life to years and years to life.

Last year, we signed an agreement with Novo Nordisk with the aim of fostering public-private collaboration. The National Health Research Institutes serve as an ideal interface, helping to bridge government policy and resources with Taiwan’s academic institutions, medical centers, domestic industry, and international support.

According to a 2023 survey by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, nearly 8% of Taiwanese aged 65 and older live with dementia. That’s roughly one in every 13 seniors. The white paper outlines 14 modifiable risk factors of dementia, including managing obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

From a risk factor perspective, we as a company is very focused on diabetes and obesity, and recognize that as a rule of thumb for people with diabetes or obesity, the risk of developing dementia is approximately double. So, certainly, when thinking about the best thing to prevent dementia is really to intervene early and work on the prevention of diabetes. One of the underlying causes there is to really think about obesity as a significant contributor and risk to diabetes and to dementia. Leading a healthy lifestyle, but also increasingly thinking about the right medication to deal with obesity is the right way forward.

Starting Jan. 1 next year, under the Long-Term Care Plan 3.0 initiative, we will expand dementia care services to cover individuals of all ages. This approach comes from the recognition that younger individuals with early-onset dementia often still possess work capabilities and bear significant financial responsibilities for their families. Without proper support following a diagnosis, the burden can overwhelm the entire family. By broadening the scope to include all age groups, Long-Term Care Plan 3.0 aims to identify and assist dementia patients, especially younger ones, as early as possible.

Under the current regulations, eligible recipients of government-subsidized long-term care services in Taiwan include people aged 65 and older, Indigenous people aged 55 and older, individuals with physical or mental disabilities and those aged 50 and older with dementia. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, eligibility will be expanded to include people under 50 with dementia who are also disabled, as well as patients in the post-acute care program.

Parents call for Taiwanese-language school in every city and county

Taiwanese, is the most commonly spoken language in Taiwan besides Mandarin. But in the entire country, there’s only one Taiwanese-language school: Beiling Elementary in Kaohsiung, which officially opened this semester. Many parents in the north try their hardest to pass on Taiwanese to their kids at home, but they can’t find a school to send them to, leaving self-study as the only option. A group of parents recently got together to call for the establishment of a Taiwanese experimental school in every city and county.

Children in tow, these parents are making a request of their local governments. Although they usually speak Taiwanese at home, those living in the north can’t find a Taiwanese-language school to send their kids to. Only Kaohsiung offers such a place.

In class, the teacher only speaks Taiwanese, and the students have no problem following along. This is Beiling Elementary in Kaohsiung, which was officially designated this semester as a Taiwanese experimental school. Even though Taiwanese, is Taiwan’s most-spoken local language, there’s only one Taiwanese-language school in the entire country. Parents don’t think it’s enough.

The government right now is promoting use of Taiwanese in the home, encouraging parents and grandparents to speak it with children. But once they start elementary school, they start learning Zhuyin and reading Mandarin. What happened to Taiwanese? I’m telling Taoyuan Mayor Simon Chang: I want a Taiwanese-language school!

According to government data, 66% of people aged 65 and older speak Taiwanese, compared to only 7.4% of those aged 6 to 14. This stark generational gap has left many parents conscious of preserving Taiwanese, but with little recourse.

Northern municipalities get more resources than those in the south. We believe they have an obligation to provide Taiwanese-language schools.

Despite the abundance of speakers, Taiwan only has one school dedicated to Taiwanese. But there are three experimental schools for Hakka, and 36 for Indigenous languages, all of which have fewer speakers. These parents hope local governments will hear their demands and help to pass on the language to future generations.

LA’s Hive Gallery artists exhibit works in Taiwan

A group of artists from the Hive Gallery and Studios in Los Angeles are exhibiting their works in Taiwan. They are showcasing a diverse range of contemporary works that span illustration, sculpture, mixed media, and ceramics. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke with the artists to learn more about their works.

Nathan Cartwright is a mixed-media artist and the founder and curator of The Hive Gallery and Studios in downtown Los Angeles. His work has been showcased internationally, and he is recognized for curating large-scale art exhibitions across the United States and Asia. One of his signature shows, ULTRAHIVE 3, recently made its way to Taiwan, featuring works by artists from around the world. During their visit, the participating artists also took part in a residency program in Tamsui, organized by Da Gang Art Gallery.

This show started in Osaka and it has been moving around the world at this point. From Osaka, to Tokyo, to Los Angeles, to Oakland, and finally Taipei. You can expect all different mediums of arts, from photography to mixed-media and sculpture, and even fabric work like this artist here sewed her piece. The idea was to do small art that is easy to transport cross-country and around the world.

This time, we’ve specially invited international artists from Los Angeles to participate in an exhibition and lectures. The goal is to offer Taiwanese audiences an opportunity to engage with globally renowned art and culture and to broaden their artistic horizons. In addition to the exhibition, we’ve also provided an international artist village, featuring accommodations and creative space in Tamsui, allowing the visiting artists to live and create during their stay in Taiwan.

For his exhibition in Taiwan, Cartwright specially crafted a series of works housed within jewelry boxes, using Super Sculpey as his primary medium.

All the pieces were made in drawers from a jewelry box. I like finding antiques, something that I can sculpt inside. You can see little handles on some of them. These pieces were made with a newer medium called Super Sculpey. It is a polymer clay, so you can cook it in an oven; you don’t need a kiln to cook it. It cooks hard and it can be painted with acrylic paint. It is really good for mixed media because you can put in sticks and stones.

Olivia Obrecht is an award-winning illustrator and tattoo artist, known for her bold black-and-white compositions and meticulous stippling technique. Her work explores themes of transformation and personal growth, often drawing inspiration from nature-particularly flowers, birds, and landscapes. Her works are greatly influenced by the Art Nouveau movement and her formative years spent in Japan. Recently, her artistic journey led her to Taiwan for an art residency, where she created new works inspired by Taiwanese calligrapher Shih Chun-mao.

This is one of the ones I created in Taiwan since I came here. Our first weekend in town, we were invited to go to master Shih Chun-mao’s calligraphy studio, and we got to watch one of his classes and observe. I was really inspired by his works and the movement of his brush strokes, and the aesthetic of everything. He actually gifted us some book of some of his works. In that, there were a couple of pieces Ii really liked and admired so I brought that into my own work. I was studying that for references and really incorporated that into the brush strokes and was inspired by that movement.

Joseph Kowalczyk is an award-winning sculptor and painter. In this exhibition, he presents a series of porcelain sculptures. One piece explores the themes of resilience and overcoming adversities.

This one is called "A Spirit Reborn." It is actually about standing up for yourself. It is about staying on top and overcoming life’s challenges. You can see the in the figure, standing proudly on top of a defeated beast and this is also an acknowledgment that some of the things that we oppose or we fight against or some of the things we dislike are actually part of us. You can see it in the teeth that are in the beast and also in the helmet of the person who is wearing the armor.

Their works will be on display at the Da Gang Art Gallery in Taipei until Sept. 21.
