
For a nation that invented bubble tea, it’s hardly surprising that Taiwanese like their boba. In fact, they drink a whopping more than a billion cups of it a year. There are 16,000 beverage stores scattered across the nation, and 40 new stores open every month. The beverage store business is lucrative but also fiercely competitive. If store owners don’t understand the flavor of the moment, their businesses will quickly collapse.
Over here, three drink shops are side-by-side. Across the street, another two are next to each other. Boba is ubiquitous, everyone is holding a drink. Taiwanese people drink a whopping 1.07 billion cups of boba every year, and 40 new beverage stores open every month.

There are five beverage stores just within our sight. On this street alone, there are 17 shops within less than 300m of each other. Look around, and everyone is having a sip.

I’ll drink whatever’s been popular recently. I like drinks with chewy things. There are many stores and they are all located close together, so I can look at every one, and drink whatever I want.
Tea on its own, or with milk. There’s something for everyone. Taiwan’s annual beverage production value is estimated at NT$130 billion. Among all the beverage stores in Taiwan, over 70% are based in the six major cities.
Kaohsiung leads Taiwan in both numbers of beverage stores and sales. Beverage stores boast high gross profits, but, still, a steady flow of profits isn’t guaranteed.

Competitive pressure mainly comes from your product strength and profitability, which depends on your product R&D and procurement costs. Larger branded chain stores have an advantage. Small brands battling it alone in these areas are very likely to close down not long after opening.
There are multitudes of beverage stores and competition is fierce. If the owners fail to understand consumer preferences, they’ll be quickly eliminated from the market.

台灣人愛喝飲料,一年能喝掉超過10億杯,飲料店數量衝上1萬6千家,而且平均每個月,就有40家新店開幕,記者實際走在台北信義區永吉路30巷,短短300公尺,竟有17家飲料店林立,但愛喝飲料的民眾也觀察到,飲料一條街,競爭很激烈,有的店開不到半年就退場。
這裡三間做鄰居,對面兩間比鄰而居,飲料店到處都是,滿街人手一杯,全台灣人,一年能喝掉10.7億杯,根據統計,平均每個月,會有40家新開幕。

不論是純茶、奶系,各有所好,粗估一年的飲料產值就有1300億,在全台飲料店中,六都飲料店數就佔7成之多。
其中,高雄市在家數、銷售金額上,都穩居全台之冠。飲料店挾帶高毛利,卻也不是穩賺不賠。

“競爭壓力主要來自於你的產品力及獲利程度,取決於你的產品研發、採購成本,比較有規模的連鎖品牌會比較有優勢,單打獨鬥的這種小品牌,就很容易在這樣的區域裡面,開不久就收攤”
飲料店開得多,競爭激烈,若沒抓到消費者喜好,淘汰速度,也很快。
