‘Heartless’ bus driver speeds off after old man collapses at stop

A bus driver in Taipei is being called heartless and cold-blooded, due to the way he reacted to a passenger who collapsed to the ground just before boarding the bus. Dashcam footage shows the bus waiting for an elderly man with a cane, who suddenly lost balance and fell to the ground. Instead of waiting for the senior to get up, the bus driver shut the door and drove off.

The driver shuts the bus doors and speeds off, leaving the man on the ground watching helplessly. Fortunately, a bystander rushed to help.

He fell over there, and a young woman came to help, I think she was riding a scooter. She called me for help, and we helped the man back up, supporting him as we walked to the side.

It’s not OK. Did the driver not see him? Maybe it was all too fast, because I think most drivers would notice someone falling down.

The driver did notice that the man fell while trying to board. He used the intercom to ask nearby scooter riders and passersby walking in the arcade to call an ambulance. He shouldn’t have handled it that way though. The proper thing to do would’ve been to step off the bus and offer assistance.

The bus company says it will enhance employee training.

7號中午，台北市萬華區一名行動不便的老先生要上公車時，腳突然沒力，整個人往後跌倒，撞上燈桿，癱坐在地，沒想到公車司機沒有下車幫忙，而是直接關上車門，把車開走，害得老先生只能再等下一班公車。

公車靠邊停，準備載客，一名拄著拐杖的老先生走起路來特別吃力，就在上公車前一刻，他突然整個人往後跌，撞上後方燈桿，癱坐在地。

公車車門一關，直接揚長而去，無助的老先生只能眼睜睜看著公車駛離，目擊民眾見狀，趕緊上前幫忙。

“剛好在外面跌倒，然後有一個女生，好像是騎士。她說她要叫我幫忙，然後我就把阿伯扶起來，然後他就，就是慢慢從旁邊，這樣子扶著這樣走。”

“有點不是很好吧。會不會有時侯沒看到?可能他是不是太快還是什麼，要不然一般跌倒公車司機都還是會看。”

“駕駛有發現老先生原本要上車，後來跌倒他是用對話廣播，請旁邊的機車騎士，還有旁邊騎樓下的路人，幫忙協助叫救護車。不過確實駕駛這樣子不應該啦，他應該主動下來做一個協助，這樣才對。

A woman volunteering over the Mid-Autumn Festival weekend in Guangfu Township has become an overnight sensation for her endearing antics. Having helped to cook for volunteers and locals, she’s been dubbed "Corn Sister," and Netizens have nothing but praise for her. FTV did an exclusive interview and found that she was just as upbeat in person. Let’s find out more.

Many volunteers in Guangfu have probably heard this voice before. This woman has made a whole pot of corn and she’s handing them out to every volunteer she sees.

And she won’t take “No, thanks” for an answer. This woman known affectionately by netizens as “Corn Sister” volunteered to help cook for Guangfu Township over the Mid-Autumn Festival long weekend. Videos of her calling for others to grab a corn have gone viral.

It’s stressful if there are leftovers. Everyone’s so hardworking. Even though volunteers don’t know one another, we still feel so fulfilled in each other’s presence. There are so many people my boss and I don’t know personally also helping us out.

Her upbeat spirit is even the more impressive, knowing that she has relatives affected by the flood. Her boss accompanied her to Guangfu after discovering this about her.

We all have trauma. But I think as long as you try, it’s something to celebrate.

After two days and even though she’s sustained some minor injuries, Corn Sister says she feels fulfilled. Other volunteers and locals also see her as a beacon of light in the disaster-hit zone.

Taiwan to make it tougher to get a driver’s license to reduce traffic fatalities

Taiwan will update its driver licensing system next year, introducing tougher written and road tests, along with stricter rules for elderly drivers, the Highway Bureau says. The changes are part of 17 reforms aimed at reducing traffic fatalities. The written tests will do away with "true" or "false" questions and be made up entirely of multiple choice questions. The age for mandatory physical assessment to determine if an older adult’s driver’s license should be renewed has been lowered to 70.

With the aim of thoroughly putting a stop to seemingly endless accidents involving elderly drivers, along with major traffic accidents, the Highway Bureau has finalized its reforms of Taiwan’s driving licensing system. Starting next year, 17 new reforms will be implemented in phases.

In the future, the overall reforms will lean towards a system where, after completing a written test and the current driving test, a learner’s license will be issued. Drivers will then be trained in actual on-the-road driving by a driving school, and then there will be another practical on-road driving test.

Tests will be more difficult. True or false are getting changed to multiple-choice, with extra questions on hazard perception and driving environment. For the practical car test, there’ll be more emphasis on stopping and yielding. Scooter license examinees will be tested in real traffic.

The difficulty of the driving test is not designed to cause drivers to fail. By raising standards, we aim to help drivers gain a correct understanding of traffic laws and regulations, as well as awareness of dangerous driving.

The pass rate currently stands at about 70%, and it’s hoped that the reform will help improve traffic safety. In addition, the age for license re-evaluation and renewal will be lowered to 70, and people aged 75 and older will have to renew their license every three years. The target is reducing traffic fatalities by 7% each year.

Li Yuan-chia exhibition at the Winsing Art Place

Today we take you to an exhibition on Li Yuan-chia, one of Taiwan’s earliest pioneers in abstract and conceptual art. On view are his works from the 1950s to the 1990s. The exhibition being held in Taipei features a wide range of media, including calligraphy, painting, low-reliefs, and more. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

On view are works by Li Yuan-chia that trace four phases of his career. His most celebrated pieces encompass painting, photography, installation, and poetry—each revolving around the symbol he created called the “cosmic point.” The cosmic point symbolized the origin and end of all things. He worked with four colors, each carrying deep symbolic meaning. Black signified both the beginning and the end, red stood for blood and life, gold symbolized nobility, and white represents purity.

He studied art in Taiwan and then he moved to Italy, and ended up in the UK. So actually, he only stayed in Taiwan for a very short period of time, but he was influenced a lot by his teacher, Li Chun-shan. This is why it makes his works so interesting. I think every work is a highlight but I especially like this work called "Pushing." It has a lot of collage, photographs, and even the artist wrote the poetry on the work. Most of his works are around the 1960s. Think about it, the early age of 1960, using a lot of brush abstract paintings into a modern artworks.

Li is an artist, poet, and curator. He is regarded as a trailblazer among Chinese artists for adopting conceptual art, weaving together Eastern philosophical traditions with Western abstraction. Throughout his career, he studied in Taipei, and worked in Bologna, London, and Cumbria, where he transformed a farmhouse into an art space, holding a variety of exhibitions. The exhibition in Taipei features his works spanning from calligraphy, painting, low reliefs, interactive works, hand-tinted photographs, and archival materials.

I have been collecting Li Yuan-chia’s work for almost 10 years. I think this is a very good time to show Li Yuan-chia’s works to the public because at the end of this year, at the end of October, there is the Taipei Biennale. There is going to a lot of curators, directors, and artists going to visit Taiwan. I think this is a very good time to show Chinese, Taiwanese artists to the world.

Li’s works will be on display at the Winsing Art Place until Jan. 18.

Trip on foot to Matai’an barrier lake successful

A team of nine from the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency completed a trip entirely on foot to the barrier lake on the upper reaches of Matai’an Creek, which caused the fatal flash flood in Guangfu Township last month. Their journey began on Sept. 30, and it took them five days to reach the edge of the lake to carry out observation. Those who took part said it was an arduous journey, but necessary despite the treacherous conditions.

It’s a long trek to reach the barrier lake. The exploration team from the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency’s Hualien Branch had to take the journey entirely on foot in the mountains in order to reach the lake.

In order to monitor the barrier lake, we must have troops reach the destination in person. They need to possess specialized skills such as abseiling to do so. There are no paths and trails. They must brave the elements to reach it.

The slope is really steep, and there are large areas of collapsed ground. The leg where we had to descend from the ridge was strenuous. The most unbearable part was when we reached the area with lots of dust.

The team headed out on Sept. 30 and took a whole five days to reach the lake, and only returned on Oct. 8. It’s already an arduous journey, and they also had to bear with the dust.

Sunlight couldn’t reach the place. It’s really like the end of the world. It’s also so difficult to breathe it felt like we couldn’t last ten minutes. After 20 minutes, we couldn’t wait to leave, but we must still reach the overflowing spot first.

Although it’s hard work that can only be done by few professionals, the barrier lake must continue to be monitored to prevent another tragedy.
