Keelung fish market revives traditional spearfishing culture

Keelung fish market revives traditional spearfishing culture

2025-10-27

Keelung’s Badouzi community recently held a bustling market where people could try free seafood samples, and even set up a traditional spearfishing “stage” for people to try for themselves. Organizers created the stage for people to experience thrill of spearfishing in the hopes of reviving this dying art of hand-to-hand combat with the sea.

People line up according to their order number, patiently waiting for their food. Badouzi in Keelung recently held a huge market with delicious seafood to try, including fish wontons and pickled squid.

Visitor
The squid is unique. It doesn’t taste like I imagined it would. It’s a little sweet. A little salty and sweet. It’s not bad.

Visitor
It’s the first time I’ve had something like this. Very unique. It’s a very traditional way of making it in the fishing village. Seems like it would pair well with alcohol.

The organizers also set up a spearfishing activity, complete with a mural of a swordfish. They held the activity, because spearfishers are in short supply these days, and therefore fewer boats are out catching swordfish. By letting people experience spearfishing for themselves, they can better understand life in the fishing village.

Tu Chien-chiu
Badouzi Village chief
Spearfishing was done like this. But if you hold it like this when you’re looking for fish, it won’t feel as heavy.

Tsai Fu-ning
Keelung economic affairs director
It shows people close-up and personal how fishers used to do battle with the sea, how they speared swordfish. They can actually feel firsthand how the heroic fishers of old braved the raging oceans.

Although there are still plenty of fishing boats that have spears, most aren’t used anymore. The community hopes that through their reenactment, people can understand the thrill and peril of traditional spearfishing.
