Taichung criticized for oversights handling African swine fever

2025-10-27

Results have come back negative for African swine fever in the first wave of tests performed at pig farms around the country. Officials say there are no signs that the virus has spread beyond the farm where the first cases of the disease were detected last week. But the government of Taichung is under criticism for its handling of the outbreak.

At a meeting on Monday, Minister Without Portfolio Chen Shih-chung asked the city government to submit a full report on its work by 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Chen pointed out that the pig farm where the disease was detected was not properly disinfected, as remnants of viral DNA could still be detected. In addition, the ban on slaughtering and transporting pigs has been extended for 10 days, to Nov. 6. Farms that violate the regulations will be fined and all their pigs will be culled without compensation.

2025-10-27
