Lih Pao Sculpture Biennial Awards announces winners

The Lih Pao Cultural Arts Foundation has hosted the Lih Pao Sculpture Biennial Awards for seven consecutive years. This year’s competition drew nearly 200 entries from 39 countries. Ultimately, 10 works advanced to the final round, competing for a total prize of NT$5 million. The results were announced, with Japanese sculptor Yoshiya Hongo receiving the prestigious Gold Award. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to Hongo to find out more about his winning work.

The organizers announced the winners of the 2025 Lih Pao Sculpture Biennial Awards. Japanese sculptor Yoshiya Hongo’s piece "The void - ZACHO"earned the highest honor, the gold award winner. Hongo created the work using aluminum sheets, and seeks to explore the theme of existence through spatial voids.

The material I used is aluminum. What’s interesting about this piece is that I pushed the form outward from within the sculpture itself, rather than shaping it by hammering from the outside.

The piece that he submitted was excellent. I think that it was both modern yet historical. It had amazing ability to texture the surface, to shape the form.

Hosted by the Lih Pao Cultural Arts Foundation, the Lihpao Sculpture Biennial Award has entered its seventh edition. This year, 195 works from 39 countries competed, with 10 finalists selected. The chosen artists hail from Japan, China, Iran, Italy, Bulgaria, and Taiwan.

麗寶文化藝術基金會連續七年舉辦雕塑雙年獎，今年吸引來自39個國家的近200件作品參賽，競爭激烈。最終10件作品進入決選，爭取總獎金高達新台幣五百萬元。今天公布比賽結果，由日本雕塑家本郷芳哉榮獲金獎殊榮。

主辦單位公佈得獎名單，日本雕塑家本郷芳哉的「空白-坐佇」脫穎而出，榮獲最高榮譽的金獎。評審對於本鄉芳哉使用鋁板構成的空間，透過雕塑去追尋存在的樣貌，並將其作為現實的呈現，給予高度肯定。

由麗寶文化藝術基金會主辦的麗寶雕塑雙年獎，至今已邁入第七屆。今年共有來自39個國家、195件作品參賽，最終有10件作品進入決選名單，入選藝術家分別來自日本、中國、伊朗、義大利、保加利亞及台灣。

Twins both become Air Force generals in Taiwan first

The military has seen instances of fathers and sons, couples, and brothers enlisting at the same time. The most famous is probably former Minister of National Defense Lee Tien-yu and his brother, Lee Tien-yi. But now there’s another pairing in the Air Force: a set of twins. Hu Chih-hua, who was just promoted to major general on Oct. 29, and his brother, Deputy Chief of General Staff for Intelligence Hu Chung-hua. They were promoted within four months of each other. Word has it they look so similar that they often get confused, even within the military.

President Lai Ching-te presides over this military promotion ceremony. One of the honorees is Hu Chih-hua, who is being promoted to major general.

The president praised Hu’s exceptional performance. But his twin brother is also a major general.

Hu Chung-hua serves as deputy chief of the General Staff for Intelligence. Coincidentally, he was promoted to an Air Force major general just three months before his brother. The siblings look nearly identical, and both graduated from the Air Force Academy, but one flies the Mirage jet and the other flies F-16s.

In 2019, the air force’s 17th and 42nd tactical fighter squadrons held an exchange event, after which they posted photos of the twins on social media.

Former Minister of National Defense Lee Tien-yu also served as chief of the general staff and commander of the Air Force. His brother was Lee Tien-yi, who also came up through the Air Force to achieve impressive accolades.

There have been fathers and sons, brothers, and couples who have served in the military together. But there was only one family in which three siblings all reached the rank of four-star general: the Chen brothers Chen Liang-chun, Chen Liang-han, and Chen Liang-pei.

The Armed Forces boasts many generals of distinguished pedigree, working together with their brothers in arms to defend the nation.

Owner could get fined NT$1M for loose pet pig amid ASL outbreak

A pig was spotted in the wee hours of Tuesday, right in Taichung, which was where the first case of African swine fever was reported. Turns out it was a miniature pig kept as a pet that had broken loose. The owner insisted that her pet pig must be free of ASL, since it’s never been fed kitchen waste. However, the central government has already ordered all pigs kept in the country to stay in their enclosures to contain the outbreak, and therefore this pet pig owner could face a fine of up to NT$1 million, depending on the risks posed to the public.

A security camera captured this video of a miniature pig roaming on the streets at night. Amid the African swine fever outbreak in Taichung, the sighting is anything but cute. Within ten minutes, police got reported of the sighting and chased the pig away. It then ran for its dear life to return home.

The location of the sighting was on Xinfu Road in Taichung’s Taiping District. We’ve tracked down the pig by following video footage.

The musk pig is currently four months old and kept as a pet in the owner’s backyard, after the owner had gotten it from a friend. At around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, the pig broke loose from the leash and went off on the streets.

According to the owner, it had only been ten days after getting the pig when the first case of African swine fever was reported. She emphasized that her pet pig should be free of ASF, since it’s fed specialized feed and leafy greens, and never leftovers.

Of course I’m worried, that’s why I’ve been really careful. You can see how there’s no one where it’s kept. The Agriculture Bureau said they’ll send someone to get it tested for ASF, and that there will be consequences if it tests positive, but none if negative.

At present, in order to contain the outbreak, all pigs kept in the country must not leave their enclosure. Failure to keep pigs in could result in a fine up to NT$1 million. As for the pet pig in question, the Taichung City Government said that it would conduct an investigation before deciding on whether to penalize the owner.

Kaohsiung Music Center exterior cleaned for fourth anniversary

In celebration of the Kaohsiung Music Center’s fourth anniversary, the outside of this unique building is being thoroughly washed. Window cleaners hang from the building like spiders, reaching every crevasse with long squeegees while balancing over 50 meters in the air. The music center’s distinct shape has made it a symbol of Kaohsiung, but also makes cleaning it difficult.

Several window cleaners hang from the top of the Kaohsiung Music Center, suspended by a complex system of ropes and pulleys. Using long squeegees and hoses, they clean every corner of the building, slowly making their way to the bottom one window at a time.

The music center is being cleaned in celebration of its fourth anniversary, leaving it shining as bright as when it was brand new.

We are holding 5 or 6 kilograms of equipment. When you come across inward-slanting sections, it can be more physically demanding, and you need to use a suction cup for help.

The outside of the Kaohsiung Music Center is made up of hexagons of varying sizes and angles, forming a hexagonal grid. But this makes it much harder to clean then a normal building, and window cleaners need to use suction cups for stability.

Our building is unique, with a distinctive exterior. It’s a double-layered structure and cleaning it takes more effort because there are many different angles.

Located in Kaohsiung’s harbor, the music center is inspired by geometries of the sea, with its exterior resembling a coral reef and overall shape echoing a surging wave. It’s an international cultural landmark and hosts many important artistic events.

Not only are dozens of concerts held here, but this is also where the famous floating Chiikawa and yellow ducks greeted the public. Window cleaners worked hard to polish the building as it celebrates its fourth anniversary, leaving the landmark sparkling.

Goddess Mazu sets off on 6-day hiking trip up Dawu Mountain

Lots of people love to go hiking in Taiwan, but apparently, even the Goddess Mazu herself likes to go mountaineering. The A-hou Mazu Foundation has organized a special ceremony that will get the Sea Goddess all the way up the Dawu Mountain, which is a sacred site for Indigenous people. She’ll be carried up to an altitude of 3,092m by 102 devotees on a six-day trip.

Worshippers offer incense and prayers as they bring Qianliyan, Sunfeng’er and Mazu down from the altar, over the censer and onto three palanquins that will take them on a hike up Dawu Mountain.

The palanquins are carried by temple staff, and more than 1,000 worshippers are joining in the procession. They walk past homes and businesses that have set up worship tables to welcome the deities.

Pingtung’s Cifeng Temple has a history of more than 300 years, and it is the first time that its resident Mazu will be carried 3,092m up to the top of Beidawu. The event aims to deepen religious exchanges.

The Mazu statue set off from Pingtung City accompanied by a large group of worshipers. After the first day, a group of 102 climbers will continue the ascent. The group is expected to summit Beidawu on Thursday and return to Cifeng Temple on Saturday, when top performance troupes will draw an exciting end to this grand voyage.

Work could soon be suspended on days of ‘extreme heat’

Facing the climate crisis, the Meteorological Act is in the process of being amended to included extreme heat as a form of hazardous weather. After the relevant legislative hearing on Monday, the draft bill could soon be unveiled. If passed, days with temperatures over 35 degrees could allow for work and class suspensions. Let’s find out more.

Summer and fall are getting hotter. Now, a legislative committee has approved an amendment to designate extreme heat as a form of hazardous weather, which would allow work suspensions. Labor groups say they also want “extreme cold” to be included.

Our party caucus has not begun discussing this yet. What we may think of as “cold” is different from extremely low temperatures that could threaten our lives and safety, so I believe this warrants more discussion.

According to statistics, the number of extremely hot days with temperatures over 35 degrees stands at more than 70 in Taipei alone. Whereas countrywide, the number in 2024 is twice as many as in 2023. Heat-related injuries also continue to rise.

Currently, the Ministry of Labor has a set of guidance on working under high temperatures, which aims to protect workers’ safety. However, we still need to consider medically proved effects of high temperatures on the human body, as well as meteorological studies on climate adaptation.

I don’t think “cold holidays” are necessary, but “heat holidays” certainly are. But in terms of extreme heat, it all boils down to how humankind can be more environmentally conscious.

The Central Weather Administrator Lu Kuo-chen stated that even if the amendment passes, extreme heat “holidays” still wouldn’t necessarily result in full-day work and class suspensions. Instead, companies and schools would have the discretion to reschedule in case of extreme heat. Currently, Taiwan’s heat warnings are in a graded system, with yellow for temperatures over 36 degrees, orange over 37 degrees and red over 38, and updated every three hours. After the amendment passes, the warning system will be more refined and require more timely responses from authorities.
