Explosion and fire at church shock Magong residents

2025-11-12

An explosion in the roof of a church in Penghu shocked locals on Wednesday afternoon. The incident happened at a Presbyterian church in Magong, and locals captured footage showing sparks flying out in every direction. Let’s hear more.

Liao Shu-che
Pastor
A neighbor across the street called and told us there was an explosion and fire. We rushed out, but by the time we went outside, the fire was out already. Our electrical wiring is quite old, so the wind and rain might be what started the fire

Firefighters suspect the explosion and brief fire was caused by a short-circuit in a high-voltage wire outside the fourth floor. Fortunately, the building was not affected and nobody was injured. But the electrical fire did cause a power outage at the church, which will have to wait until Tropical Storm Fung-wong passes before repairs can commence.
