Netizen arrested at airport after ‘satirical post’ about VP

2025-11-12

A netizen could be paying a big price for a satirical post he put online. The man surnamed Chen, had posted about Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, who spoke at the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China summit in Europe last week. Chen wrote that, "According to a report on France’s BBC news, Taiwan donated 8 billion euros to get Hsiao to expell saliva onstage for 20 minutes." Chen was arrested at the airport on Tuesday right after returning from an overseas trip.

Chen insists that the post was clearly tongue in cheek, and that people who took it seriously had cognitive problem. He says some obvious signs of the humor include the fact that the BBC is presented as a French company, which many online noted. He maintains that his action did not break the law. If he is found to have violated the Social Order Maintenance Act, he could face three days of detention or a fine of up to NT$30,000.
