Campus shuttle bus becomes festive Xmas wonderland

Christmas is just around the corner, and a shuttle bus in Tunghai University is bringing festive cheer to everyone on campus. Its driver has packed the bus full with ornaments of every kind and size. Students stepping onboard are greeted with a surprise Christmas extravaganza that is lifting their spirits at the end of a long day of classes.

Festive cheer is in the air inside this bus. The straps have been decked out in colorful sparkling red. There’s wreaths and baubles. It’s Christmas bling wherever you look.

There’s even a mini Christmas tree behind the driver, with cotton snow, snowmen and all. It’s so cozy.

This red-and-green extravaganza was put together by the driver and students at Tunghai University.

We started decorating on Saturday. Me, friends and a student. We spent 10 hours, from 2 in the afternoon to midnight! And even then we weren’t done. So we had to come back the next day to finish it up.

The bus is a campus shuttle at Tunghai University in Taichung. After discussions with the student council, the driver decided to make it Christmassy with a budget of NT$6,000 and more than 10 hours of work. Students are delighted.

Tunghai is a Christian university, and around the end of the year, Christmas installations appear all over campus. This time, the bus has become a huge hit, attracting students and passengers to photograph every inch of tinsel and post it online.

東海大學校內接駁車變浪漫 "耶誕老人.薑餅人"滿滿節慶風

耶誕節前夕，台中東海大學的校內接駁車，搖身一變成為"耶誕公車"，司機和學生會學生討論後，耗時超過十小時打造，在車內佈置耶誕老公公、薑餅人，還有迷你耶誕樹跟小雪人，讓學生直呼超用心，坐車沈浸在滿滿耶誕味。

公車裡頭，瀰漫濃濃耶誕氛圍，公車拉環搖身一變，換上繽紛閃亮亮紅色，另外也少不了耶誕花圈，跟Bling Bling的發光裝置。

最大亮點，是駕駛座後方這顆，迷你耶誕樹，下方鋪上棉花，彷彿真的下雪了，搭配雪人玩偶，氛圍感滿滿。

這些巧思，全出自於這名，東海大學校內接駁車司機和學生的巧手。

“禮拜六開始(佈置)，那天我跟我朋友然後一個學生，我們花了十個小時，從下午兩點，到晚上十二點還沒弄好，再來就是到了隔天再來收尾。”

這台公車，是台中東海大學的校園接駁車，司機和學生會學生溝通討論後，決定打造這輛耶誕公車，花了至少6000元，耗時超過十個小時，一起發想改造，讓不少搭乘的學生，感到又驚又喜。

“很特別，就是跟平常的裝飾差很多，看到(耶誕公車)覺得心情會變很好。”

“很開心，因為覺得司機很有心佈置，覺得這樣一天下課完之後，看到(耶誕公車)覺得心情會變很好。”

東海大學，屬於基督教學校，耶誕節前後，校內陸續出現各種耶誕裝置，這回司機和學生，一起發想這部耶誕公車，吸引眾多校內、校外學生，搶搭打卡拍照。

Technical school alumni win gold at WorldSkills Asia

Taitung’s Saint Joseph Technical High School has once again shone brightly on the international stage. Two of the school’s alumni won gold medals for cabinetmaking and joinery at this year’s WorldSkills Asia competition. Once the two were chosen to compete, they spent at least seven hours a day practicing to steadily improve their skills.

These two young woodworkers have been practicing 50 hours a week for the past year, perfecting their skills through small adjustments. They were preparing to represent Taiwan at the WorldSkills Asia competition.

I think the Asia competition is just a small goal in the middle. The global competition next year is most important.

Chen Liang-wei won the gold medal for joinery as this year’s WorldSkills Asia and Chen Chi-sheng won gold for cabinetmaking. Both are alumni of Taitung’s Saint Joseph Technical High School.

Our alumni from past years all believe in passing down their skills and have made many selfless contributions, like spending their own time and money, and being willing to pass it down through the generations. I think that’s the best thing about Taiwan.

These two skilled young men both took their turn standing on the podium, showing the precision of Taiwan’s woodworking. In recent years, Saint Joseph Technical High School has been struggling due to financial pressure and Taiwan’s declining birthrate. But once news of its struggle broke, donations poured in, and the school had an opportunity to rebuild last year.

Now alumni have once again secured gold medals at an international competition, proving the value of their school and adding a new chapter to its long history of cultivating skilled professionals.

Taichung Art Museum inaugural exhibition opens

The Taichung Green Museumbrary, also known as the Taichung Art Museum, is a significant new cultural landmark in Taiwan. Combining an art museum, a public library, and surrounding parkland, it offers a unique space for creativity and learning. FTV reporter Stephany Yang visited the museum’s inaugural exhibition and spoke with the artists and the director.

The Taichung Art Museum’s inaugural exhibition features over 70 artists from 20 countries. One of the artists exhibiting is Adrien Tirtiaux, a Belgian artist known for large-scale installations. This work, titled "Post-Museum Evidences", is a 25-meter-tall installation that cuts through the museum’s ground floor and two galleries. The work uses materials from the building’s construction.

It is like a giant drill. 25 meters high that would pierce through the whole museum. You can discover it in three parts. It is like three chapters. You are on the ground floor, then you go to the first exhibition space and the next. In each space, along this drill, you will discover different geological strata. Here you see the foot of the column, all the layers of the earth and stones that are beneath us. The more you go up, you will see I used materials of the construction of the museum. So, from Earth, you see asphalt and road pieces that correspond to the history of this park as an airport. You will see concrete, steel, and the mesh. And I started to use what I found here. Basically all the waste. The garbage as well to build my sculpture and to tell the story of life after the museum.

Another work is by Haegue Yang. It is her largest Venetian blind–based work to date, rising nearly 27 meters and conceived as a “cosmic tree” connecting earth and sky. By utilizing vertical LEDS and dotted laser lights, visitors can encounter shifting perspectives and light patterns in different parts of the day.

The name of the piece is Liquid Votive Three Shade Triade. It is a long title. I always give a very long title but the title gives a lot of hints of the piece. Liquid meaning something very fluid. Votive, meaning something you pray for and wish for. It is a 27-meter-high piece in one singular box. I think that is one breakthrough I can mention. The second one is, I think my work has not been exposed to such a dynamic lighting situation, meaning we have two looks of this piece. A daytime look and a nighttime look. In order to design the nighttime look, we work a lot with the lighting. There are two types of lighting that I never used before. One is an LED tube which has this very elegant curve. The second is the green dotted light that constantly moves to give a feeling of encountering fireflies in the middle of the forest at night. These two lights create a nocturnal look.

Another highlight is "Process" by Taiwanese artist Michael Lin. This installation transforms the museum’s glass roof into a vibrant painted surface, inspired by the mechanical printing process.

It is inspired by the mechanical printing process, kind of the industrial printing. One of the processes of the printing process that we kind of don’t see is the waste that is produced by that process. Because I worked with this printing process, I realized it produced a large amount of waste. I started to collect them and then I thought about reintroducing it in the work itself. That is what I really did here on a large scale. The complex as you know, is made up of a museum and a library. The sky bridge that we are on right now is the only place you can see my work.

The Taichung Green Museumbrary has officially opened. This innovative complex unites the Taichung Art Museum and the Taichung Public Library, bringing exhibitions, reading, and public cultural programs together in one building.

The Taichung Green Museumbrary is located on the north side of Central Park. The “Green” refers to the greenery of the park, and in a broader sense, to the environment and the city itself. “Art” represents the art museum, while “Library” represents the public library. The Green Museumbrary is a venue that brings these three elements together. For the opening exhibition of the Taichung Art Museum, we drew inspiration through the relationship between people and the natural environment, as well as the transformation of Central Park, which was once the Shuinan Airport before becoming a park. From the perspective of this new institution, we hope to re-imagine the relationship between a museum, its environment, and all living things.

The exhibition will be held at the Taichung Art Museum until April 12.

Japanese gold locomotive marks 10-year partnership with TR

A locomotive from Japan’s Tobu Railway was refashioned in gold and delivered to Taipei, to celebrate ten years of partnership between Taiwan Railway and the Japanese company. Not only is the gold color radiant under the sun, it was also selected to evoke the 1,000 Samurai Procession and bring blessings to Taiwan. The locomotive and railways by extension also represent connection, making the display even richer in symbolism.

The locomotive being here is also significant, in that Tobu Railways also brought with it, blessings from three important Shinto shrines to the people of Taiwan and residents of Taipei.

The golden livery radiates under the sun, evocative of the 1,000 Samurai Procession held twice every year.

It’s special because the gold is fashioned after the Nikkō Tōshō-gū procession. When sunlight hits, it really evokes that feeling. As for the golden livery, even if you’re not a railway fan, the gold is still quite something to behold.

This locomotive is among the first of Tobu Railway’s Limited Express SPACIA series. Popular among international tourists, these trains run between Asakusa, Tokyo and Nikkō, a historic town with several World Heritage Sites. Even a group of visiting highschoolers from Japan stopped by for photos.

It’s spacious and well-lit inside. The corridors are also beautiful. The outer appearance also just makes you want to take it. It’s really great. This trip to Taiwan is so well-timed, or to be more precise, I’m very happy to be able to visit.

It says that it’s celebrating the 10th anniversary, and I’m really pleased, because our two countries are near in distance, and we also get along so well. The transportation’s really convenient, and we’re so close by plane. So I’ll be back. I’m going home tomorrow, but Taiwan is a really great and really interesting place, so I hope I’ll have a chance to visit again. I hope we’ll stay friends.

The exhibition of the golden locomotive demonstrates the close partnership between the two railway companies. It’s also a thoughtful cultural display with rich symbolism.
