Formosan rock macaques show off to visitors at Sun Moon Lake

2025-12-18

A troop of monkeys have been filmed on a trail near Sun Moon Lake looking adorably cute and quite unafraid of humans. However, experts are reminding visitors that they are still wild animals and to be very cautious. They say you should not feed them or even stare at them, as they see this as provocative and could attack. We take you to Sun Moon Lake to find out more.

A group of monkeys, both large and small, appear on a tranquil Sun Moon Lake trail.

Two of the monkeys preen each other. A third young monkey then leapfrogs over one monkey’s head, and then jumps back, showing off. Finally one of the larger monkeys takes the youngster away in both arms. A passerby captured this amusing scene on camera.

This group is not afraid of strangers and is extremely cute, but you should not startle them or feed them.

However, there were quite a few visitors at the lakeside trail. As Formosan rock macaques are wild animals, if you encounter a troop roaming about, you need to be vigilante. You should avoid staring at them to prevent being attacked.

Don’t try to get too close to a monkey; it’s best to keep a certain distance. Maintaining an appropriate distance is absolutely essential for your personal safety, as well as the monkey’s safety. Don’t provoke a monkey. Staring at it is interpreted as unfriendly by the monkey.

To avoid conflict between humans and monkeys, do not disturb or feed them. Keep any food you bring with you out of sight. Most importantly, maintain a safe distance from the monkeys. The Sun Moon Lake authorities say they will increase patrols and remind tourists to be mindful of their safety.

2025-12-18
