Temple truck offers freshly grilled meat on the go

2025-12-24

A barbecue on the back of a moving truck sounds like the perfect way to have a snack while on the road. You can just drive along behind it and get a piece of grilled meat while waiting for the traffic light to turn green. If it sounds too fantastic to be true, all you have to do is check out a video that’s recently gone viral online. It shows a truck with a grill at its back, zipping along the streets of Taitung, and offering slices of meat to anyone who wants some.

A man sits at the back of a moving truck, grilling meat on a barbecue and asking fellow road users if they want a bite.

A passenger on a scooter nearby rushes to get a piece. This mobile BBQ truck is actually a work vehicle from a temple festival.

People are feeling a bit uneasy due to the recent stabbing, so we want everyone to relax a bit and have fun. This kind of human warmth is becoming rare nowadays.

The free cookout on wheels happened in downtown Taitung, after a parade at a local temple. The temple had put together a BBQ meal to reward staff, but there was so much meat that they decided to get creative and share it with everyone from the back of a moving truck.

- So special
- Would you try some?
- Yes!

A video of the giveaway sparked much debate online. But authorities remind the drivers there are traffic rules to follow.

Huang Cheng-wei
Police officer
The relevant traffic safety regulations state that when transporting people and goods, doors and cargo compartments must be closed properly.

Police officers say the grill-on-the-go was dangerous and in violation of traffic laws, with fines of up to NT$18,000. This time around, they just issued a warning, saying that next time, it’s best to keep BBQs stationary to avoid accidents on the road.
