More than 200,000 people rang in the new year with Taipei’s iconic fireworks extravaganza at the tallest skyscraper in Taiwan. And this year, it was clearer than ever which building that would be. After a mix-up between the Taipei 101 and the Taipei Sky Tower last year, the latter put up a massive sign to clear things up. Let’s take a look.
Fireworks light up the night sky, to the sound of Mayday’s “First Day” to usher in the new year. This year’s fireworks extravaganza at Taipei 101 was titled “Gen. Taiwan” and blasted 16,000 rockets over six minutes. Color changing effects and jets at different angles staged a futurism-inspired spectacle.
At ground level, people were ready with their cameras. But remember last year?
The dark and obstructed views caused many revelers to mistake the Taipei Sky Tower with the Taipei 101. From the Taipei City Council, it’s crystal clear that they are different buildings. One has a spire, and the other a slanted roof, not alike at all.
- The 101 is behind it.
- They’re so different. One’s tall and the other one’s short.
To prevent mix-ups, the Taipei Sky Tower put up a message on its façade saying “I’m not 101,” with an arrow pointing to the real Taipei 101 and its fireworks. Apparently, from Songzhi Road, the two skyscrapers appear to be a similar height. It’s an understandable mistake to make.

A lot of people mixed up the buildings the past two years, so they added the arrow pointing to the Taipei 101.

Maybe they confused the buildings because it was rainy and foggy last year. It’s a lot clearer this year thanks to the sign.
This stroke of creative brilliance made netizens burst out laughing, with many praising the Sky Tower as the most helpful landmark.
