Mayday’s special guest for their concert on New Year’s Eve was none other than drummer Ming’s daughter, Roselyn. She sang the band’s “I Won’t Let You Be Lonely” with her father.

At the age of 19, she’s already released a number of singles, which were mostly composed by her too.

- Do you think you got your musical talent from mom or dad?
- Mom always says I got my voice from her, but dad always says it’s from him, so I’m actually not sure. I’ve no idea, probably dad.
- But a quick look at you, I’d say you got your looks from your mother.

Even with a crowd of 10,000+, Roselyn didn’t appear nervous at all. She also has great rapport with Ashin, who she considers another father figure.

Owner abandons 46 rabbits after one bites child, requests them back

Hsinchu County animal protection officers and Councilor Chu Chien-ming recently received a report that a large number of rabbits had been abandoned. They ended up saving 45, as well as one that had already passed. Officers said that abandoning pets is against the law, subject to a fine of between NT$30,000 and NT$150,000. The owner said he released them impulsively after one bit his child. He said he wishes to get them back, but fears it may now be impossible.

Even after capturing several rabbits, animal protection officers kept shouting that there were still more ahead. Dozens of rabbits could be seen hopping around in the open.

We found a total of 46 rabbits here. One had already died from the cold.

They weren’t wild rabbits. They were released by their owner in a grassy area of the Wuhua Industrial Zone in Hsinchu’s Xionglin Township. Animal welfare volunteers investigated after receiving a report, and ended up saving 45 rabbits, which are currently being kept at a county shelter. Afterward, the owner immediately reached out to his representative to apologize.

The owner’s child was bitten by one of the rabbits and needed many stiches. He lost control of his emotions and abandoned the rabbits in a forested area.

If the owner expresses a desire to take them back, it won’t happen. He’s already broken the law. After handling the case according to the law, he will no longer be able to adopt any animals from our shelter. So it’s basically impossible for this to happen.

Even though the owner has apologized and wishes to atone, he’s already broken the law by abandoning his rabbits, and could be fined up to NT$150,000. The county again called on owners to take responsibility for their pets, saying you can’t just take in animals when you feel like it and abandon them when you don’t want them anymore.

Unique Wanli building designed to naturally regulate temperature

Traveling around New Taipei’s Wanli District, you might stumble across a strange white structure that resembles a peanut or an anthill. Called the DoGood House, it not only looks unique, but is also Taiwan’s only green building to have a usage license. It utilizes wind tunnels to eliminate the need for AC while also staying warm in winter. By also incorporating artwork and local fishing culture, the park has become a new tourist destination for Wanli.

When viewed from above, this irregular white structure resembles a peanut, or maybe an anthill when viewed from the side. But aside from its strange shape, this “DoGood House” in New Taipei’s Wanli has the unique distinction of being Taiwan’s only green structure to receive a usage permit.

The design utilizes a peculiar shape and thick walls with wind tunnels running throughout to naturally cool the hot wind from outside. Even without air conditioning, the building stays cool in summer and warm in winter.

Hot air rises and cool air falls. This physical principle of circulation is used to maintain a 3-to-5-degree difference in temperature between the inside and the outside.

Aside from the green building, the park also has outdoor leisure space with a large chameleon structure created by artist Liu Ting-tsan. Made from steel, it gives the park an artistic flair. There are also red and blue crabs scrabbling up the wall made of steel and stone to represent Wanli’s famous crab industry.

Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture promotes tourism in Kaohsiung

A delegation from Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture recently visited Kaohsiung, bringing its famous strawberries, pears, beef, and rice balls for people to try. Not far from Tokyo, Tochigi offers beautiful hot springs and vast bamboo forests great for leisurely walks. Fireworks on New Year’s Eve are a must-see for lots of people, nut how far would you go if you couldn’t make it? A video clip taken on the highway on the big night recently went viral. In it, drivers slowed down to catch a glimpse of the fireworks at a nearby amusement park, to the horror of highway police. They were urged to move on or pay up, since driving way below the minimum speed limit could significantly increase the risk of collisions.

Fireworks light up the sky at the stroke of midnight. This was the New Year’s Eve countdown party at Janfusun Fancyworld in Yunlin, joined by some 20,000 revelers. But they weren’t the only ones enjoying the spectacle.

The national highway was dotted in red lights from slowed down cars. But there was hardly a traffic jam.

- All of you in the front: the minimum speed limit is 60kph. Keep coasting through and I’ll fine all of you at once.

The highway police urged drivers to accelerate and move on. This was taken on National Freeway No. 3, along Gukeng Township in Yunlin. Every year on New Year’s Eve, the police would remind the public not to linger on the highway, but drivers still do otherwise, just to get a glimpse of the fireworks.

While the fireworks show was in process, some drivers did slow down, but not so much that they’d gone below the minimum speed limit; nor did they park illegally or cause accidents. However, should the driver violate traffic rules, we would then issue a fine between NT$3,000 and NT$6,000, as stipulated in the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, for every instance of violation.

Some drivers may not think much of slowing down to enjoy the view along the highway, but the police reminded the public that doing so could significantly increase the risk of collision with cars behind, and so they tightened enforcement on the last day of the year.

Pop diva Jolin Tsai stuns fans with jawdropping staging at concerts

The Taiwanese queen of pop Jolin Tsai has just wrapped up three spectacular nights at the Taipei Dome, and fans are still buzzing from the mythical-themed spectacle. From towering beasts to a four-ton golden pig that literally sprayed money into the crowd, the concert was nothing short of a fantasy blockbuster. With jaw-dropping visuals and powerful messages, the show proved once again why she’s at the top of the game.

Jolin transformed into an earth spirit atop a 30-meter-long “Serpent of Desire” slithering around the Taipei Dome, a scene hailed as one of the most over-the-top concert spectacles ever.

In the second chapter, Jolin summoned the “Golden Pig of Greed,” which continuously spat out “pleasure banknotes,” pushing the concert to another explosive high.

The “Golden Pig of Greed” allegedly cost NT$36 million to build and weighs 4 tons. The concert featured more than 20 giant mythical beasts, including a “Celebratory Bull” and a “Rainbow-Winged Pegasus,” which turned the venue into a full-scale monster carnival of mythical beasts.

Equally breathtaking was the “Book of Truth,” from whose turning pages Jolin slowly emerged, drawing gasps from the audience.

Dressed in a skin-tight snakeskin battle outfit, Jolin transformed into the “Mother of Pleasure,” backed by a seven-story-tall “Daughter of Pleasure,” to deliver her manifesto to fans: “You are the garden. You are pleasure itself.”

The pop diva reportedly spent NT$900 million on everything from stage design to the massive props that left audiences in awe. But as a key spokesperson for early bedtime, Jolin admitted that staying up late for three nights straight came with a price.

My sleep schedule is a bit messed up right now. I really hope I can do concerts at 5 p.m., or even 2 in the afternoon. Before the show, around 7 p.m., I suddenly fell sleep, so everyone turned off the lights and I took a 15-minute nap. Even today, I feel a little untethered, like after the adrenaline drops, it feels a bit like a hangover.

With the concert series coming to a stunning close, Jolin said she could happily perform a few more shows, if the stars align when it comes to booking venues.
