Chinese influencer gets residency revoked after controversial takes

2026-01-19

Another Chinese influencer has had her residency in Taiwan revoked, after stirring controversy in the country. This time around, it’s Guan Guan, a native of Guangdong who was previously married to a Taiwanese man. Guan Guan recently posted videos declaring that Chinese flags would eventually cover Taiwan, and last year even went to Machangding to pay tribute to CCP spies. She is the latest in a string of Chinese marriage migrants to lose residency over controversial statements regarding cross-strait relations, following Ya-ya, Xiao Wei, Enqi, and Qian Li. Interior Minister Liu Shih-fang says the decision was made through joint review meetings in accordance with the Cross-Strait Act. The case has reignited debate over national security, free speech, and cross-strait influence.

Guan Guan
Chinese influencer
In two days I will be forced to leave. I strongly protest against die-hard Taiwan independence separatist Liu Shih-fang for stripping me of my legal residency right in Taiwan.

Chinese influencer Guan Guan is from Guangdong, China, and was previously married to a Taiwanese man. She’s posted many controversial videos on TikTok, from claiming that Chinese flags will one day cover Taiwan, to wishing for the unification of Taiwan with China for the “prosperity of the motherland.” To escape the heat, she at one point deleted some of her videos and changed her username to “Little chili.” She also went to pay tribute to communist spies Wu Shi and Zhu Feng. Recently, she’s had her residency rights revoked by the National Immigration Agency.

Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, Hong Kong, Macau, and the mainland are all Chinese territory. How am I belittling national sovereignty?

Pa Chiung
Taiwanese influencer
What’s wrong with people like her getting deported? It doesn’t matter what country you are in, if you say that you hope your host country will get annexed, in a democracy, they will just deport you. Meanwhile, why I am wanted by the Chinese Communist Party in your country, the People’s Republic of China?

Guan Guan left Taiwan voluntarily, but not without one last taunt saying that a reunion would come on the day of China’s unification with Taiwan. Sources say the NIA revoked her residency because her statements went beyond the bounds of freedom of speech, rallied support for armed aggression against Taiwan, and belittled Taiwan’s national sovereignty.

Liu Shih-fang
Minister of the Interior
All cases and related issues are handled through joint review meetings in accordance with the Cross-Strait Act.

In recent days, another Chinese marriage migrant has sparked criticism online after making a post complaining about traditional characters in her child’s homework, which she found cumbersome to write. She said she hoped cross-strait unification would come soon so that simplified characters could take over.

Liu Shih-fang
Minister of the interior
There is no upcoming unification. We in the ROC use traditional characters.

Chen Pei-yu
Lawmaker (DPP)
We engage in academic exchanges with China. But did you know that when reading classical texts, students from Chinese universities ask us about how traditional characters are written, and how they can be interpreted. So please respect the choices of the people of Taiwan.

Last year, several Chinese influencers married to Taiwanese nationals were deported from Taiwan. Among them, Enqi returned to China, where she has continued hosting livestreams about Taiwan and cross-strait issues, which earned her a warning from security officers.

- Turn it off.
- Turn it off, I’m telling you.
- It’s a difficult road.

Enqi was visibly shaking after the exchange. It turns out that back in China, she might be missing the freedoms she once had in Taiwan.
