‘Secret password’ needed to eat at stinky tofu spot in Keelung’s mountains

There’s a stinky tofu restaurant in the mountains of Keelung run by just one person. He’s come up with many creative ways to serve the classic, but his specialty is making sure it’s extra stinky, joking that it’s a lethal weapon. When customers come in, they might not see the owner. They have to shout his name and say they want to eat stinky tofu for him to appear.

Blocks of stinky tofu are fried until golden brown and crispy, then drizzled with sauce. Or you can get it steamed and silky like tofu pudding. This Keelung restaurant is legendary in the world of stinky tofu.

Up in the mountains of Keelung, the road up to this makeshift restaurant is surrounded by trees and greenery. Handmade signs cover the outside. After calling a few times, the owner comes out.

When you arrive, you need to give the secret password. Call for A-hsing阿興. It’s rustic and homey. When you come here, call for A-hsing, and I’ll know you’re my customer. If you just call for the boss, sorry, it could be the neighbor across the way or next door.

Hu Yuan-hsing has been selling stinky tofu for 30 years, all without any help. He’s busy running the kitchen by himself, so when you arrive, remember to shout out: “A-hsing! I want stinky tofu.”

My husband suggested I come check it out. It’s strange to get stinky tofu in the mountains. I found it weird when I got here.

I saw it online and came out of curiosity. Everyone said the owner is a strange guy, and so is the tofu. That it’s really stinky. I drove for 40 minutes to get here.

The owner jokingly calls his tofu a “lethal weapon.” He’s come up with all kinds of ways to serve it, from steamed, to boiled, braised, and fried. You can also choose how stinky you want it, from medium to very stinky, up to extra stinky.

It’s a new experience. I haven’t had it before. I’m still getting used to it. It’s definitely stinky enough. If this were in the city, you’d definitely get complaints since it’s so smelly.

Many customers discovered this place online, where people are recommending it as an especially smelly, but also interesting experience.

基隆有一家位在山上的臭豆腐店,老闆一個人做生意,研發了好幾種吃法,還強調特別臭,開玩笑說"是人間武器"。更特別的是,客人上門,可能找不到老闆,要在門口大聲喊"阿興!我要吃臭豆腐",才有人出來接待。

切好的臭豆腐,倒入油鍋裡炸到外皮金黃酥脆,再淋上自製醬汁。還有這道清蒸臭豆腐,軟嫩到像在吃豆花,這是一家在基隆,被譽為臭豆腐界傳說的店。

來到基隆山上,兩旁都是樹和草叢,搭出來的棚子,外面是手寫看板。叫了幾聲,才看到老闆出來接客。

“來到這裡要通關密語,叫阿興,有鄉土味又有親切感,來到這裡就是要找阿興,我就知道你是我的客人,叫老闆,拍謝,我對面的也是老闆,隔壁也是老闆”

老闆胡元興經營臭豆腐店30年,都沒請助手,自己一個人就在廚房裡忙東忙西,才會要客人來,記得大喊"阿興~我要吃臭豆腐"。

“先生說過來吃看看,(山裡面吃臭豆腐)真的很奇怪,一進來就怪怪的”

“網路看到,好奇來吃吃看,大家說老闆怪,豆腐也怪,說很臭,開40分鐘(來)”

老闆自嘲自家臭豆腐是"人間武器",研發各種吃法,蒸、煮、滷、炸都有,還可以自選臭度,中臭、大臭、特臭。

“不一樣的感覺,沒吃過,習慣中,夠臭,這個要是開在市區,會被抗議吧,因為蠻臭的”

許多客人都是網路上看到,慕名而來,直呼真是個又"臭"又有趣的體驗。
