Kaohsiung farmers hold competition to crown best guava

Farmers in Kaohsiung recently held a competition to find the best guava. The fruits were judged strictly on their appearance, taste, and overall quality to find the champion among them. Let’s visit the winning orchard to find out how it was grown.

Samples of guava and jujube planted by top farmers are neatly lined up for judging. Experts rate them according to sweetness, taste, and other criteria. The Yanchao Farmers’ Association organized this quality competition for guava and jujube. Among the fierce competition, a few stood out.

This is the winner of the 2026 Yanchao Guava Competition. The exterior of the guava is beautiful, and its sugar content is at least 14 degrees Brix.

The champion farmer this year was Hsieh Wan-sheng. At over 70 years old, Hsieh keeps an orderly orchard with bagged guavas that keep away pests and protect their appearance.

Hsieh has been growing guava for about 20 years. Even before he retired, he maintained the orchard on his days off. Now that he can devote all his time to it, he puts his all into growing the fruit. He credits their superior taste to his use of organic fertilizer and sparing use of pesticide.

The geography and water quality here in Yanchao is good for guava. I also only use organic fertilizer, so it’s delicious. And I don’t spray pesticide.

Guava orchards cover about 1,153 hectares of Yanchao District with an annual output value of NT$1.15 billion—the most in all of Kaohsiung. Thanks to its unique volcanic geography rich in various trace elements, the guava grown here are exceptionally sweet.

高雄果農實力大賽依外觀.口感選出"芭樂冠軍王"

高雄最近舉辦一場果農實力大賽,專家依據芭樂的外觀、口感等整體品質,嚴謹評分,選出了芭樂冠軍王;一起到農地看看,好吃的冠軍芭樂是怎麼種出來的。

好幾組優秀農友種植的番石榴和蜜棗,一字排開,由評專業審團依據糖度、口感等多項指標進行評分,燕巢區農會舉辦番石榴及蜜棗品質評鑑競賽,經過激烈的競爭,名次出爐。

“這是115年燕巢芭樂評鑑比賽,第一名的芭樂,芭樂的外觀很漂亮,甜度在14度以上。”

芭樂評鑑冠軍是他,70多歲的農友謝萬生,來到他的芭樂田,這一顆顆套袋後的芭樂映入眼簾,不僅防蟲,也能讓果皮更漂亮。

從事芭樂種植已經有約20年,還沒退休時,就一邊工作一邊擔任假日農夫,退休後,擔任全心全意投入,而他種植的芭樂會這麼好吃,就是因為使用有機肥,而且農藥用得少。

“燕巢的芭樂,我們這裡的地質、水質都很好,而且我使用的都是有機肥,絕對好吃的,我沒什麼在噴農藥。”

“就回來幫忙,就是幫他找一些網路上新的資訊來跟他講,就是也是幫助他進步。”

燕巢區番石榴種植面積高達1153公頃,年產值11.5億元,居全市之冠,因為獨特的泥火山地質,含有多種微量元素,也讓這裡的芭樂格外香甜。
