Taiwan-born Texas state representative returns to Taiwan to encourage investment

The dust has finally settled on tariff negotiations between Taiwan and the US. Taiwan has long enjoyed a robust trade relationship with the state of Texas, and recently, the southern state has become an attractive hub for Taiwanese businesses looking to expand across the Pacific. Originally born in Taipei’s Shilin District, Texas State Representative Angie Chen Button is the first woman to chair the state’s House Economic and Small Business Committee and the only Asian-American woman in the State’s house committee on International Relations. She recently spoke about her own lifelong journey of perseverance as she encourages Taiwanese businesspeople to do the same.
My elementary-school classmates also came. I don’t believe it. People don’t believe I was a troublemaker back then. Now I’m a state representative.
She might not be a big woman, but her humorous and powerful way of speaking captures the room.

I’m just very very honored that I have the chance to preach Taiwan. And I’m hoping whatever’s good for Texas, will be good for Taiwan. Why Texas? Why now?
Taiwan-US tariff talks have finally come to a close. Texas, which already boasts over US$20 billion in trade with Taiwan, is now seen as an ideal destination for Taiwanese businesses looking to expand across the Pacific. As a Texas state representative who was born in Taiwan, Angie Chen Button was recently invited back to give a speech.

I’m a daughter of Taiwan. It’s a tremendous honor to be able to spread Taiwan’s name to every corner of the world. It’s the second office set up after Texas, in Taiwan, and the first in this century.
Button was elected to the Texas House in 2009, where she has served for nine terms. She’s not only the most senior woman in the House’s Republican caucus, but also the chamber’s only Asian-American woman. Local Texas media have named her the best state lawmaker many times over. But this Texas political star was actually born in a cramped 28-square-meter apartment in Shilin that housed seven people.

My tale of strife could fill a book this thick. It’s been tough. Since I wasn’t born and raised in the US, I had to work many, many, many times harder than everyone else. So, business owners, if you come to Texas, you must have this conviction: Since I’ve made this decision, I’m going to see it through.
Button’s story of graduating from NTU, going to the US for graduate school, finding work, and eventually entering politics reflects her unyielding spirit. Now she’s back to encourage business owners to work just as hard as they hope to establish a footing in America.

台美關稅談判塵埃落定，美國德州本就與台灣有強勁貿易動能，近來更是吸引不少台商擴大布局，被視為台商東進的重要據點。老家在台北士林的德州眾議員陳筱玲，身為德州眾議院最資深的女性議員，也是唯一亞裔女性代表，以自身年奮鬥史，鼓勵台商拚到底，不要退縮。
“小學的同學也來了，我簡直不敢相信。人家都不相信我小時候很調皮，現在竟然會當議員。”
小小身板，妙語如珠，幽默中不失力量。

“我真的很榮幸，有機會可以去推動台灣和德州交流。我希望對德州有利，也對台灣有利。為什麼是德州?為什麼是現在?”
台美關稅談判，塵埃落定，本就與台灣，有超過200億美元貿易動能的美國德州，如今被視作台商東進的絕佳之地，擔任德州眾議院議員的台灣女兒陳筱玲，也受邀回台演講。

“我是台灣的女兒。能夠使台灣的名聲，遠傳播到世界各個角落，我覺得這是非常榮幸。在德州在台灣成立這個辦事處，這是第二個，而且也是這個世紀的第一次。”
從2009年當選眾議員，已連任九屆，不光是德州眾議院共和黨團中最資深的女議員，也是唯一一位亞裔女性，但屢次被當地媒體評爲最佳立法者的政壇台灣之光，其實出身自台北士林，一間只有8.4坪大，卻擠了一家七口的小窄房。

“我的奮鬥史也可以整整寫這麼一本書，辛苦，因為不是(美國)土生土長的，要比人家加倍加倍再加倍的努力。所以台商，您來德州的話，絕對要有個信念就是，我既然已經做了這個決策，我就要拼到底。”
台大畢業到美國留學、工作到參政，用拼到底的精神，和電影"西部開拓史"，鼓勵台商，堅定赴美設廠。
