With the Lunar New Year right around the corner, Taiwan’s eight main financial institutions have launched their bill exchange programs. That is, exchanging old bills for fresh ones, which are seen as more desirable to pack in red envelopes. Crowds on Day 1 of the operation weren’t as big as in previous years, but lines still formed at some locations. One popular service was getting all notes in every denomination available, for those looking to get all five colors.
Counter services will be available until Friday at the Bank of Taiwan, the Land Bank, the Cooperative Bank, First Bank, Hua Nan Bank, Chang Hwa Bank, Taiwan Business Bank and Chungwha Post. New bills may also be collected from specific ATMs operated by the Bank of Taiwan and Mega Bank. In addition, CTBC Bank will supply new bills in limited quantities at its ATMs in 151 convenience stores around Taiwan. But remember that if you want more than 10 bills of NT$100, you’ll have to make several withdrawals, so you might end up spending quite a long time at the ATM if you have a big family.
