Lai recognizes honorary chair of Taiwan’s Olympic committee

2026-03-10

Did you know that Taiwan once competed under the name “Taiwan” in the Olympics? That was a fun piece of trivia that President Lai Ching-te brought up on Tuesday, during a reception for Lin Hung-tao. Lin is the honorary chair of Taiwan’s Olympic committee, which is officially called the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee. Over his 12 years as chair of the committee, sports in Taiwan flourished, putting Taiwanese athletes on the global spotlight. On Tuesday, president Lai conferred the Order of Propitious Clouds on Lin, for his work and efforts during his tenure. Let’s hear more.

Lai Ching-te
President
In the summer of 1964, when I was less than 5 years old, our country competed in the Tokyo Olympics under the name “Taiwan.” The Olympic torch relay even passed by Taiwan, which is the only time that has ever happened. To welcome the Olympic flame, the Mao Gong Ding shaped cauldron was made, and it is still on display at the Taipei Sports Park. It’s a testament to this piece of history, and it continues to encourage our people. I believe that, with our increasingly higher international standing, and our increasingly strong athletes, Taiwan can once again shine on the international stage. Let us work together to unite our society through sports and strengthen our nation through sports.

Last year, the president established the Ministry of Sports, headed by Olympic gold medalist Lee Yang. Its ultimate goal is to make Taiwan into a sports powerhouse. The ministry aims to secure more resources for development, while encouraging Taiwanese to exercise regularly and stay in good health through sports.
