Many students have no experience of the workplace, while the southern county of Taitung faces labor shortages in summer. The Taitung government has come up with a solution that resolves both these issues. It offers a work experience program for youth over the summer vacation that’s now in its fourth year. Some of the participants liked coastal sunny Taitung so much that they say they want to work there after graduation. Let’s find out more.

They come to Taitung to experience the workplace before they officially enter the workforce. We thought we’d use the summer vacation, which is also the time when Taitung County has its greatest labor shortage, to match them up to jobs, because the public sector, private sector and non-profit sector strongly welcomes this.

From their summer vacation experiences, many young students learn about Taitung’s slower-paced local economy and are even willing to work in Taitung after graduation.

Cultivating talent for Taiwan is really a long-term endeavor for Taitung. We plant a seed in their hearts. They may not stay in Taitung this year or next, but they might come back soon afterward. So we’re not worried about that.

The county government is offering 200 positions this year, welcoming young students from all over the country to come and inject new vitality into Taitung.

不少年輕學子，透過暑假體驗，了解台東的慢經濟，畢業後甚至願意留在台東就業。

Vietnamese students learn martial performance from scratch

The annual Songjiang Battle Array event in Kaohsiung’s Neimen District is about to begin later this month. For the first time, Shih Chien University’s Kaohsiung campus—which has previously won three championships in the Creative Battle Array Competition—is forming a team of all Vietnamese international students. As most masters of this martial performance speak Taiwanese, the students had to overcome the language barrier while also learning a new skill from scratch. They’re sure to be a highlight of this year’s event!

Students wield their weapons to the swell of drums and gongs, aiming to perfect the powerful movements typical to the Songjiang Battle Array.

At the center of a circle, three people strike a battle formation as another leaps through the air above them. Everyone here is a Vietnamese international student from Shih Chien University in Kaohsiung’s Neimen District. They formed a team to compete in this year’s national Creative Battle Array Competition, and are practicing intensively for the preliminaries starting on March 28.

I only learned about the Songjiang Battle Array when I came to Taiwan for the first time. Vietnamese culture is pretty different from Taiwanese culture.

A Vietnamese translator came to help. But there are some names for Songjiang Battle Array movements that she couldn’t directly translate. For certain movements, our coaches had to demonstrate repeatedly for them to learn it.

Most battle array coaches speak Taigi. But for these Vietnamese students who just started studying Mandarin, learning the terminology is another challenge altogether.

At first, there was a lot of frustration when we were practicing certain movements. I even considered giving up. But after a period of adjustment, they began to understand what the instructors were teaching through the movements themselves.

Shih Chien University’s Kaohsiung campus has already won three consecutive championships in the Creative Battle Array Competition. Now, the school is sending a team of international students to express themselves on this exotic stage.

Frozen’s Olaf joins Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang onstage at GTC

A touch of Disney’s movie magic met cutting-edge technology on one of the world’s biggest AI stages, at Nvidia GTC. A surprise guest captured the spotlight: it’s Olaf from Frozen, brought to life not on screen, but as a fully interactive robot. Joined by CEO Jensen Huang, the beloved snowman showcased just how far artificial intelligence has come, moving, responding, and even joking in real time. Powered by Nvidia’s advanced computing and trained in virtual worlds, this real-world Olaf offers a glimpse into the future of physical AI. It will debut later this month at Disneyland Paris.

A special guest rises onto the GTC stage. It’s none other than Olaf from Disney’s Frozen.

Olaf moves freely around the stage, and it moves its arms and three-snowball-section body. He can quickly respond to any of Huang’s witty remarks.

- It’s in your tummy.
- That’s gonna be amazing.
- And you learn how to walk inside Omniverse.

This Olaf robot was developed in collaboration with Disney and is powered by Nvidia’s Jetson computing platform, which shows the possibilities of physical AI. Olaf was simulated and trained in a virtual environment, and can now move over many different surfaces, including real snow.

E-commerce firm looking to AI to avoid downsizing amid high personnel costs

How expensive is it really to run a small business? In a recent post, online shopping influencer Mr. 486 said that with salaries, labor insurance, and health insurance, on average it costs NT$1.05 million per year to hire a single employee. And amid a challenging economic climate and competition from big conglomerates, small businesses face an uphill battle.

Everyone at this e-commerce firm is handling their own slice of the business. Kai Chih, who juggles administrative and customer service duties, is also responsible for editing videos and designing graphics. But she raves about the benefits, saying it’s a friendly workplace for working mothers.

We really can bring our kids with us to work. All my colleagues are super helpful, too. It really makes a difference for a working mom like me. If you wake up and find your kid is sick, it can really drive you mad. So that’s what I like most.

A happy workplace is what everyone aspires to. But for online shopping influencer Mr. 486, it’s tough being a boss. In a recent Facebook post, he said it’s particularly difficult running a small business. He has to compete with big conglomerates while also keeping salaries stable and taking care of his employees.

Company trips are entirely paid for. Like this trip to Japan cost nearly NT$80,000 per person. A year’s salary is 14 months of pay. Even if the company makes a loss or takes on debt, I’ll still pay the year-end bonus no matter what, even if we have to sell off everything we have.

For the employees, this is certainly money worth spending. But if you look at the numbers, it’s tough to swallow. A random sampling of six employees of different ages shows that on average, it costs NT$1.05 million a year per employee for their salary, as well as health, labor, and other insurance. But Mr. 486 said that a boss shouldn’t complain about economic hardship, even if he’s the only one at the company not receiving a salary.

All of our employee expenses, including salaries, bonuses, benefits, and insurance, comprises about 40% of our annual expenditure. We aim to take care of all 54 of our employees. At the same time, we’re looking to leverage AI to increase our per capita output. That way, we won’t be reducing our workforce.

By integrating AI to boost productivity and transitioning from leasing to owning its storefronts, the business hopes to stabilize costs against market fluctuations. Ultimately, the goal is to create a win-win for both management and staff, setting a new standard for a happy workplace.

Entrepreneur finds success selling lunchboxes in Paris’ financial district

Taiwanese lunchboxes can even be found in Paris’ financial district! The owner, Wang Wei-chien, got into the restaurant business after working as an engineer. She mainly targets the lunch rush, offering a main and a selection of sides just like your typical bento restaurant in Taiwan. Through food, she’s offering a taste of home halfway across the world.

Freshly made three-cup chicken, fragrant beef stew, and a selection of homestyle sides are all on display, to be served with purple rice. This lunchbox restaurant, so familiar to anyone who’s lived in Taiwan, is actually in the Paris financial district.

When lunchtime rolls around, customers start filing in. Some eat outside, chatting while enjoying their meal.

Many people have become loyal customers after just one try. For Taiwanese exchange students, eating here shows them the meaning of homesickness. The owner, Wang Wei-chien, is originally from Changhua. She created the entire restaurant from scratch.

This place is exactly like a Taiwanese lunchbox restaurant. You can choose your main and the sides. I’d get this feeling when buying a lunchbox in Taiwan. You’re a little nervous while lining up, wondering if what you want will sell out, so you keep sneaking peeks. French people do it too!

Wang studied chemistry at National Yang Ming Chao Tung University and worked in a tech company before pursuing a business degree in Paris. But she ended up in the kitchen, opening two restaurants. But the journey was far from smooth.

There was one week when I only sold two lunchboxes. I could only laugh.

It’s expensive to open a shop in Paris, with rent alone costing over 4,000 euros a month. To save money, she doesn’t even have a sign. But she trusted that Taiwanese food would be appreciated everywhere, even without fancy packaging.

We embrace cuisines and cultures from around the world. But in fact, to a certain extent, very few of us actually strive to bring Taiwanese culture out into the world. You might see a very poised older French woman chowing down on pork knuckle. It’s so contradictory, it makes you smile.

Exclusive: renter ghosts landlady and leaves 24 cats on property

A landlady in Kaohsiung had serious cleaning up to do, after her renter ghosted her, racked up almost NT$100,000 in outstanding fees and left 24 cats to their own devices on her property. It goes without saying that the place was completely trashed, and some cats even died after the renter left. The surviving cats have been taken into a halfway home and the local animal protection office is investigating the case.

Rescuers were notified of cats left in this studio apartment. The sight as soon as the door opens is the stuff of nightmares.

The litter boxes are filled to the brim, and even infested with bugs. The conditions are so dire for the little ones still hanging on.

Because they kept owing me the deposit and rent, and only then did I come to our property in person, and discovered that there were 24 cats inside. The woman ghosted me in mid-February. The landlady accused the renter of not paying rent and demanding early termination of their contract. They even left personal items on the property after leaving. Some of the cats were also left here.

The landlady could not imagine that her property would be left in such a dire state. She’s urging the renter to pay all outstanding fees or face legal action. As for the cats, they’ll be taken in to a halfway home for now. The animal protection office is also investigating the case. If determined to be that of pet abandonment, the owner will be punished by law.
