A new US threat assessment indicates that China does not currently plan to invade Taiwan in 2027 and has not set a clear timetable for unification. The report has drawn political reactions in Taiwan. The KMT says the findings undermine claims of a 2027 military takeover, a narrative that it says was used by the DPP to gain political advantage. However, Defense Minister Wellington Koo cautions that China’s military expansion has never stopped, pointing out that Beijing’s defense budget increased by 7% this year.
DPP lawmaker Puma Shen has warns that China may instead pursue “non-military means” to achieve its unification goals. Meanwhile, Mainland Affairs Council Minister Chiu Chui-cheng says Taiwan must prepare for the worst while striving for the best, noting that Beijing continues to frame the Taiwan issue as a historical mission tied to national rejuvenation.
