Madou pomelo farmers struggle as less than 20% of flowers bear fruit

Pomelo farmers are facing another challenging year in Tainan’s Madou District. Last year, the crop was severely damaged by Typhoon Danas, and this year, only one or two flowers out of 10 are bearing fruit. The cause is the weather in a drier than usual spring season. Having made inspection on site. officials say that a relief plan will be put forward if the situation doesn’t improve after the second fruit drop. Lets’ hear more.

The Agriculture and Food Agency will conduct another site inspection in mid-May after the fruit drop period to confirm the extent of the damage. We will then proceed following the relevant regulations regarding disaster relief.

Every year, farmers struggle to sell large fruits. We buy the ones with bad skin for processing. That’s how we as an association try to help farmers.
Last July, Typhoon Danas ravaged the area, plucking pomelos that were ready for harvest and submerging them under rainwater on the ground. That was last year: Too much rain, but this year, there is not enough. The drier season has caused trees to bear few fruits. The local farmers’ association says it will take action to help purchase fruits that are harder to sell, to reduce the impact on farmers and maintain the good reputation of the Madou pomelos.

春雨少! 台南麻豆文旦收成重創 著果率剩1到2成

台南麻豆文旦，去年受到丹娜絲颱風重創，今年因為春雨偏少，天氣因素再度衝擊！部分果樹結果率只剩下一到兩成。農糧署與地方民代展開會勘，將等到文旦二期生理落果結束後，如果狀況還是沒改善，就會提出救助方案，協助麻豆文旦農們，度難關。

可能有經過去年颱風的影響啊，再加上下半年都沒雨水啊，所以來到今年二月份，要開花結果的時候，它已經沒力可以開花了。”

“農糧署會在五月中旬，生理落果期結束以後，再一次到現場去聯合會勘，確認災損的一個狀況，然後再依照天然災害救助辦法的相關規定辦理。”

“每年農民種這麼大果實，他們比較難賣，皮比較不好的，農會都會收來做加工，所以這個部份農會還是會持續來幫忙農友做這樣的事情。”
去年七月，丹娜絲颱風重創台南麻豆文旦，原本該在樹上等待收成的果實打落，全泡在水裡，成了文旦湖。沒想到今年上半年卻因為春雨偏少，導致有些文旦開花沒結果，著果稀疏。農會也承諾啟動收購機制，地方攜手中央，就希望降低衝擊，維持住麻豆文旦的響亮招牌。
