Four British tourists narrowly escaped death while staying at a guesthouse in the popular mountain town of Jiufen in New Taipei. The group had checked into the property on Sunday afternoon. By night, they were feeling unwell, experiencing dizziness and nausea. The symptoms got so bad, that at 2 a.m. they called a taxi to take them to the hospital, where they were found to have low oxygen levels, likely due to inhaling carbon monoxide: a colorless, odorless and tasteless poisonous gas known as “the silent killer.” Let’s hear more.
Chen Hui-tsai
Emergency physician
Since they developed the symptoms suddenly at the same time, we became very alert, as we suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. We performed tests, and sure enough, it was carbon monoxide.

Fire fighter
If you’re staying at a guest house in the mountains, and you want to use a gas-powered water heater, it’s best to make sure if it is installed in a place with sufficient ventilation.
Voice of Tsai Wen-chung
New Taipei Tourism and Travel Department
Together with the fire department, we dispatched personnel to conduct an inspection today. After the exact cause is determined, we will require the business to make improvements and we’ll impose penalties in accordance with regulations.
An inspection of the guesthouse found that, although the water heater was installed outside, it did not comply with standards on ventilation. The four guests had reported the situation to the owner of the property, and they were initially transferred to a different room. But the symptoms persisted and the situation didn’t improve until they received oxygen therapy at the hospital. Fortunately, they were all fine, and were able to check out on their own on Monday, cutting their stay short by two days.
