But the fun quickly ended when the girl sat on a recycled hot water dispenser and grabbed what she thought was a safety handle, only for the handle to suddenly give way. Fortunately, the girl was not seriously hurt. Among the other quirky attractions in the exhibit are other carnival rides, including a carousel and Ferris wheel. But despite the carousel moving at a snail’s pace, a closer look reveals that none of the seats had any safety restraints. Organizers now say they will review safety measures on every ride to stop similar accidents from happening again.

Pile of mattresses makes 1km roadside wall in Taichung

A new kind of great wall has arisen in Taichung, made up of 3,000 discarded mattresses. Piled alongside the road outside a cleaning facility in Tanzi District, this pile of mattresses stretches for nearly 1 km. Residents worry it could attract mosquitoes or rats, but the local Environmental Protection Bureau said they disinfect them every day. The mattresses are expected to be removed within three months.

From an aerial perspective, there appears to be a wall of white along the side of the road, nearly surrounding the entire block. But what is it?

It’s made up entirely of mattresses, from small single ones to big king size ones. There are about 3,000 mattresses piled up along the side of the road, stretching for nearly a full kilometer.

This road leads to the cleaning facility in Taichung’s Tanzi District, and is not open to the public. The local Environmental Protection Bureau said that mattress disposal is normally outsourced, but no company has taken the contract this year. Now about 20,000 mattresses are stockpiled across the city, with over 3,000 temporarily stored at the Tanzi cleaning team facility for the past nine months.

In terms of management, this is a single-entry, single-exit site, and it’s basically an internal storage area. As for rodent issues, we’ve stepped up disinfection in the areas where the mattresses are piled up.

The cleaning team is doing their best to disassemble and discard the mattresses, but progress is slow. Once a new contractor is hired, the bureau says the mattresses can be cleared within about three months.

Affectionate police station cat cheers up lost girl

Getting lost is a scary experience for young kids, but not so much so when a cat could keep the child company. Recently, a little girl in Hsinchu was taken into a police station by a woman who spotted her all alone on the streets. Seeing that she might have felt nervous, officers knew immediately how to comfort her—with the station’s resident cat. But as soon as the girl could start to get to know her new friend, her mother called and picked her up. Funnily, the girl ended up reluctant to go home with mom.

The little girl wandered alone on the streets of Hsinchu. A woman who spotted her took her to the police station. The girl had a wary gaze, but there’s a perfect solution.

The little girl was a bit nervous when she was taken in, but she was calm for the most part. She noticed that we have a cat at our station. She was really interested in the cat, so we offered her tube treats and fed the cat with her.

The police station’s resident cat warms up easily to people. The officer knew immediately that the girl would be happy to interact with the cat, when the adorable kitty immediately grabbed her attention. But just as she was about to make a new feline friend, the phone suddenly went off. It was the girl’s worried mother calling for help. The mother had left the car temporarily to make a quick purchase, only to have the girl leave the car on her own.

The little girl opened the car door on her own and went out. Her mother had no idea where she had gone. But it ended very quickly. The mother found her daughter almost immediately.

But the girl had become reluctant to go home. She wouldn’t stop petting the cat on the way out. When the mother and daughter reached the entrance, she turned back with arms wide open to ask for a hug from an officer.

The officer responded positively. With the kindness of strangers and an adorable cat, the girl ended up with a fond memory.

An 11-year-old anteater named Blackie has gone missing from Taipei Zoo, which is calling on the public to help locating the animal. On Monday evening, the female tamandua escaped by climbing up a banana shrub and disappearing into the darkness. It’s been three days, but she’s still nowhere to be found, which has sparked a frantic search in the area. Zoo officials are urging the public to keep an eye out for the runaway anteater and hope that she finds her way home safely soon.

A southern tamandua, also known as the lesser anteater, looks up the tree trunk before climbing up. Her name is Blackie, and visitors love her. She’s been missing from the Taipei Zoo for a couple of days now.

Blackie had climbed up the hardy banana shrub. When the banana leaf tilted from her weight, she had the opportunity to latch onto the imitation boulder structure, and from there on escaped.

Surveillance footage from 6:55 p.m. on May 18 shows Blackie lurking in the bromeliad plant area, right by the visitors’ walkway, only to disappear in a flash. The zoo reckoned that she’d made her way out by climbing up a banana shrub.

Considering her age and the fact that she’s not been out for a long time yet, we’re narrowing our search zone by a little bit. It’s been three days now, which works out to about 6km to 9km away from the zoo.

The southern tamandua is a solitary, tree-dwelling mammal native to South America. It has a sticky tongue several dozens of centimeters long, sharp claws on the front limbs and a hairless prehensile tail. Its diet is composed of ants, termites and other insects.

A little more than five years ago, Little Red had also escaped when the weather was good, like now. She was happy in the beginning, but a cold snap a little later on was a little hard on her, and she was discovered by a hiker. Of course, we took her back in at the soonest possible moment. The southern tamandua is nocturnal, so we have automated cameras installed around the area, and we’re checking every day for any traces of Blackie.

In 2020, another female southern tamandua named Little Red was only found three months after escaping. Blackie, the protagonist this time is a lovely granny aged 11. She’s about 50cm to 60 cm long, and sensitive and timid in nature. On the third day of her escape, the zoo hopes that people will keep an eye out for her, but urges anyone who spots her not to try to capture her. Instead, they should notify the zoo immediately.

A night jogger in Xitun District stumbled upon dozens of discarded syringes scattered across sidewalks and grass near Central Park, some with exposed needles still attached. The shocking scene has alarmed nearby residents and students, who fear that the area may have become a hotspot for drug use. City councilors are now demanding answers, warning of potential infection risks and questioning whether this is a long-ignored blind spot in local law enforcement. Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing surveillance footage to track down whoever is responsible.

In a short stretch of road, we found more than 15 discarded syringes on the grass and the sidewalk, some with the needle exposed. There are also yellow rubber tourniquets, and a rolling tray. Locals are worried that they might step on them and get infected, especially at night when it’s dark.
