A disturbing discovery in Taichung is raising serious concerns about public safety. A night jogger in Xitun District stumbled upon dozens of discarded syringes scattered across sidewalks and grass near Central Park, some with exposed needles still attached. The shocking scene has alarmed nearby residents and students, who fear that the area may have become a hotspot for drug use. City councilors are now demanding answers, warning of potential infection risks and questioning whether this is a long-ignored blind spot in local law enforcement. Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing surveillance footage to track down whoever is responsible.
One needle here, another one there. Everywhere you look there are discarded syringes. But this is clearly not a hospital, but a public space. The sight of the many needles discarded here has freaked out locals.

It’s very weird. If I were wearing sandals I’d be even more afraid of stepping on them. We’re also close to a school. So I’m afraid that the drug user would make it to our campus after shooting up.

If I were to step on them I wouldn’t know what to do. It’s worrying.
In a short stretch of road, we found more than 15 discarded syringes on the grass and the sidewalk, some with the needle exposed. There are also yellow rubber tourniquets, and a rolling tray. Locals are worried that they might step on them and get infected, especially at night when it’s dark.
Chen Yu-jung
Taichung City Councilor (DPP)
Taichung’s public safety is once again flashing a red warning light. If you step on the needles or get pricked, you could get a disease. This is not an isolated drug problem. It’s a matter of urban management, public health and public security.
Chen Ya-hui
Taichung City Councilor (DPP)
Is this a collapse of public safety, or a blind spot that has been left ignored? The city government shouldn’t wait for citizens to post online to actually see how serious the situation is.
Huang Shou-ta
Taichung City Councilor (DPP)
The Taichung City Government should find the truth behind the incident and strengthen patrols to prevent public panic.
A night jogger was shocked to find syringes on the ground along Kaixuan 2nd Street near Central Park in Xitun District. The area is and surrounded by new developments, meaning it is generally quiet and might have become a place for illicit activities.
Tu Chih-hung
Police officer
We dispatched officers to the scene to collect evidence and bring it back for a forensic investigation to determine whether there was drug use or other illegal activities.
Police immediately dispatched officers to the area to investigate and collect evidence, and surveillance footage is being reviewed.
