Taipei bans smoking in tourist hotspot of Ximen

If you visited Taipei’s popular Ximending shopping district today, you may have noticed that the air is cleaner than before. That’s because starting June 1, smoking is banned in the area. With fines of up to NT$10,000 for violators and law enforcement patrolling the streets, it’s best not to risk a fine. Smokers who crave a cigarette must now head to three brand-new smoking booths that prevent the smoke from escaping into the street.

Ximen is packed with visitors from all over the world. Starting Monday, a new rule is entering effect here. Are people aware?

Taipei is making moves to become a smoke-free city. Starting June 1, smoking will be forbidden everywhere in Ximending, except in specially-designated smoking rooms.

The smoke-free area is delimited by Zhonghua Road, Xining South Road, Chengdu Road and Hankou Street, including the pavements and arcades on the outer perimeter. It also includes an area to the west of Zhonghua Road, delimited by Xiushan Street, Yanping South Road and Hengyang Road. To smoke, three negative-pressure smoking booths have been installed on Zhonghua Road, Hengyang Road and Wuchang Street.

People caught smoking in no-smoking areas will be investigated. To report a violation, you must provide concrete evidence, such as their personal information or their license plate, the time and location of the incident and photos or videos for the health department to conduct a follow-up investigation.

Taipei’s Department of Health says that guards will patrol the area from 11 in the morning to 10 at night starting June. In addition, members of the public may also report violations with photo or video evidence. Violators face fines of up to NT$10,000.

台北市西門町自6月1日開始，禁菸區擴大，想要吸菸只能到指定吸菸區，違規者最高可開罰新台幣1萬元。衛生局將會派員加強巡查取締，民眾也可提供車牌、時間地點、照片或影片檢舉，希望新制上路，還給市民乾淨無害的空間。

聚集觀光客，人來人往的西門商圈，週一開始，多了一項新規定，民眾知道嗎？

禁菸範圍，從中華路一段、到西寧南路、成都路、漢口街二段平面區域，包含邊界之騎樓、人行道、以及延平南路、中華路一段、秀山街、衡陽路邊界之騎樓、人行道範圍內。想要抽菸，就得到中華路、衡陽路、武昌街上三處指定負壓式吸菸區。

“民眾若在禁菸區內吸菸，稽查人員就會進行取締，若民眾檢舉時需提供具體事證，如民眾的個資或車牌、時間地點、照片或影片，提供衛生局進行後續調查。”

北市衛生局也表示，6月開始早上11時至晚上10時將會派員加強巡查，加上稽查取締並行，除了人員稽查外，民眾也可依照片或影片檢舉，違者處最高新台幣1萬元。

Oriental storks, with their elegant long beaks and striking black-and-white plumage, are an endangered species. Recently they’ve been seen being chased by packs of marauding feral dogs along the mudflats of the Zhuoshui River in Yunlin County. The Oriental stork was startled and flew away, but the black mutt still put all its energy into the chase. This nerve-wracking incident was seen at the mouth of the Zhuoshui River in Yunlin.

A photographer captured this nail-biting scene that made viewers break into a cold sweat. The bird being chased was an Oriental stork but actually there was more than just one dog, it was a whole pack. One adult Oriental stork was accompanied by three chicks. A family of two adults and three chicks looked very warm and loving, but the feral dogs were eyeing them menacingly, forcing them to remain constantly vigilant.

Every morning, the feral dogs chase after these birds to eat their eggs, and so on. We hope to get these feral dogs properly dealt with.

Recently Oriental storks built a nest to raise their chicks on a high-voltage power tower along the Zhuoshui River. After the three chicks left the nest, they often went out to sea to forage for food. Conservation groups and bird lovers are calling for their protection.

The operation to trap feral dogs in the area started on March 30 this year. Six stray dogs were captured and have been placed in shelters.

The Yunlin Animal Disease Control Center said it has set up traps for a long time, but after one group of feral dogs is caught, a new one will move in. These feral dogs don’t just chase and attack people, but are now even posing a threat to endangered birds.

Culinary arts seniors make their very own graduation banquet

It’s almost graduation season. In Taiwan, students usually treat their teachers to a graduation meal or banquet. But instead of spending money on a fancy restaurant, a group of culinary management students have put together their very own graduation buffet-style banquet. They’ve incorporated local Tainan ingredients and drew inspiration from local cuisine, and made their teachers truly proud of their growth and accomplishments.

A roast beef carving station and baked veggies for the side—this buffet-style banquet has all the must-haves. But this isn’t your average hotel buffet. It’s the graduation banquet of culinary management students at Chang Jung Girls’ High School in Tainan.

Two students expertly work the shaker while they make mocktails, served with plum fruits as garnish. There’s also shaved ice, topped with a specially made syrup. The students have unleashed their creativity and skills for this feast.

Trail guides bear heavy loads, prepare meals, join rescue efforts

Hikers often hire trail guides to accompany them up the mountain. But for many of these guides, their work goes beyond helping carry heavy luggage. They help hikers prepare meals, carry equipment to repair mountain huts, and even join rescue efforts in the event of a disaster. These unsung heroes support life above the clouds, earning them the title “cloud-walkers.”

These trail guides hoist 40kg packs on their backs to bring up a mountain. Between the three of them, they’re carrying 120kg of food and materials, enough for a group of 10 to go on a seven-day hike.

Familiar with the mountain paths, these guides lead hikers on long journeys, advising them through more dangerous sections.

Navigating challenging cliffs, they carefully bring their heavy packs to the next campsite. They rely not only on fitness and experience. Cooking skills are just as important.

Before the hikers wake up, the guides begin cooking in the dark. Using camp stoves and big pots, they prepare a nutritious breakfast that will energize the group for the day’s journey.

I dry the vegetables at home first and wrap them in newspaper once they’re dry so they don’t spoil.

These skilled, experienced guides also help repair buildings on the mountain.

When Paiyun Lodge on Yushan was being renovated in 2022, guides like these carried the materials 8.4km to the lodge—a journey of five to seven hours one way.

NTU PhD student from Tanzania gives moving speech at commencement

Taiwan’s top university, National Taiwan University held its 2026 commencement ceremonies on Saturday. The highlight of the event was none other than the moving speech made by a PhD student named Nathan from Tanzania. Long before a PhD in environmental engineering, he was a gifted kid who grew up in poverty. A chance encounter with the late Dr. Jane Goodall changed his life, allowing him to go to boarding school and eventually come to Taiwan. He says that his dream is to build a school in his hometown, so that kids like him could also turn their life around through education.

He thanks his professors in Taigi. This is Nathan Thadeo Yoashi from Tanzania. He was the representative for international students at National Taiwan University’s commencement on Saturday. His story is nothing short of extraordinary.

Every day, I would just find a small piece of sweet potato, and swallow it down with water. Because I had no shoes, my father would use a thick needle before bed to pry out the thorns and parasites embedded in my feet. Taiwan has not only granted me knowledge. It has given me a warm and loving home.

In his eighth year in Taiwan, Nathan is not only graduating with a PhD from National Taiwan University. He’s also happily married with a son. His speech has gone viral, touching everyone with his resilience, gratitude and the spirit of paying it forward.

I am still that child who survived on half a sweet potato and unfiltered water. I am still that child who had no electricity and could only study under the glow of the moonlight. Fortunately, with Dr. Jane Goodall’s full financial sponsorship, I was able to study at a boarding school.

While in elementary school, he was a top student and learned to speak English better than everyone else, and so he was selected to interpret for Jane Goodall, who was conducting research nearby, when she visited his school. Under her recommendation and sponsorship, he eventually went on to study in boarding school in Tanzania, and later arrived in Taiwan for university. Nathan says that now that he has the ability, he will carry Jane Goodall’s legacy forward by giving back.

President of Czech Senate visits Taiwan after 6 years

Six years ago a Czech politician made history in Taiwan during a visit to the Legislative Yuan. He’s Miloš Vystrčil, the President of the Senate of Czechia, who announced to legislators that “I am Taiwanese.” Now, he’s back in Taiwan, despite sharp condemnation from China and political friction back home. The Prime Minister of Czechia reportedly refused to let him fly to Taiwan on an executive plane. But that did not deter Vystrčil, who made the trip on a China Airlines flight instead. After landing, he stressed that as free and democratic countries, neither Czechia nor Taiwan have to follow anyone else’s orders.

It is completely normal for the President of the Czech Senate to visit the Speaker of Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan. It is natural that countries supporting Beijing’s “One-China Principle” may dislike this, but that does not mean we are obligated to follow it. Taiwan and Czechia are both free and democratic countries, and we do not have to obey others’ orders about who we should or should not be friends with. Cooperation between Czechia and Taiwan is based on mutual benefit and has brought many advantages to both sides. Taiwan should be a friend of Czechia, and Czechia should of course, be a friend of Taiwan.

Vystrčil’s first stop in Taiwan was a meeting with Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu, where he presented a Czech lion statue symbolizing resilience and perseverance, expressing hope that Taiwan–Czech relations could overcome setbacks and grow stronger. Han, in turn, emphasized that “regardless of whether countries have formal diplomatic ties, friends from all nations are welcome to engage in exchanges.” During his visit, Vystrčil is also expected to meet with the president and vice president, as well as attend a screening of the documentary “I Am Taiwanese,” which chronicles his 2020 visit to Taiwan.

The much-hyped Nvidia GTC Taipei 2026 has kicked off on Monday morning, starting with a kickoff session with a conversation among tech industry leaders in Taiwan, including Barry Lam of Quanta, Jonney Shih of ASUS, T. H. Tung of Pegatron and Y. J. Mii of TSMC. Shortly afterwards, CEO Jensen Huang took the stage to a rapturous crowd. As always, Huang delights the audience with Nvidia’s breakthroughs, but this time, he’s added a personal touch to his keynote speech. Let’s take a look.
