Farms that raise livestock usually have a distinctive odor, but one farm has found a way to combat the stink. A chicken farm in Changhua’s Puyan Township is using dried grass, fallen leaves, and beneficial probiotics to break down chicken waste in a “fermentation bed,” greatly reducing odor and aiming for zero waste.
The chickens at this farm have shiny feathers, a sign that they’re healthy, eating well, and getting enough sleep.
A farmer spreads dried leaves in a chicken coup, helping keep the environment dry. But there’s another secret to keeping this place clean.

We put probiotics on the ground, and as long as there are leaves, the microbes will move onto them.
Tsai learned this technique when he was in Japan. He creates a fermentation bed using dried grass and leaves, which can be collected from the local sanitation department, paired with probiotics to help decompose and digest chicken droppings.

The chicken droppings will decompose, so our chicken coop doesn’t have a smell and doesn’t need to be cleaned.
Grass, leaves, and probiotics also provide ideal bedding for the chickens to lay their eggs. The technique has saved the farm a lot of money.

It can save us at least 5% of feed, cut labor by about 80%, and reduce water use by around 80%.
A typical farm may have an odor from animal droppings, but Tsai is proud that his farm is odor-free. By using dried grass and fallen leaves that retain heat and absorb moisture, this environmentally friendly approach recycles resources.

懶人養雞法! 彰化埔鹽雞場"鋪乾草+益生菌"分解排泄物

養雞靠智慧。一般的養雞場，難免會有一股排泄物的臭味，但是，彰化埔鹽一處養雞場，取得乾草和落葉，再搭配生態益生菌，排泄物被"發酵床"裡面的微生物，分解和消化，達到零排放的目的。
來到這處雞場，每一隻雞，毛都閃閃發亮，牠們吃得不錯，睡的也講究。
這一堆一堆的乾落葉，讓雞所身處的環境，不但很乾爽，裡面還有著秘密武器。

“我們地上就放了益生菌，有落葉，菌就跑到落葉上面來”
這是蔡桂輝到日本觀摩學習到的懶人養雞法，乾草和落葉向鄉公所的清潔隊索取就能得到，搭配生態益生菌，雞隻的排泄物，就會被"發酵床"裡面的微生物，分解和消化。

“我們雞的大便上去，就會被分解掉，我們的雞舍，都沒有味道，就不用清雞舍”
草葉結合益生菌，不但能提供舒適的墊料，好讓雞生蛋，飼主自己也節省不少人工運作成本。

一般人的養雞場，可能會有排泄物的臭味，不過，讓蔡桂輝自豪的，是雞場"去味化"，而且使用能保溫、吸濕的乾草、落葉，省去草葉進焚化爐要耗的電力，這樣的養殖方式，對環境友善，與資源也能再循環。
