When hunger or thirst calls, many prefer to not leave the house. But starting today, members of Uber’s delivery service will need to pay even more to enjoy the convenience of at-home dining. Originally NT$120 a month, the cost of membership will now be NT$199, an increase of 65.8%. Yearly memberships will see a similar hike, rising from NT$1,200 to NT$1,990. Uber stated that those wanting to cancel their membership must do so at least 48 hours before the renewal date.
Now that the yearly membership is NT$790 more expensive than before, many have expressed their anger online, saying it took them “half the day” to find where they could cancel their membership on Uber’s website. Coinciding with this wave of cancellations is less work for delivery drivers, who noticed today’s orders are fewer than normal. Uber Eat’s biggest competitor Foodpanda has responded by slashing its rates for 6-month memberships. The days of low-cost food delivery might be coming to an end though, as the Delivery Workers’ Rights Protection and Delivery Platform Management Act will go into effect on July 21.
