Power outage leaves Executive Yuan in dark for 40 minutes

2026-08-07

The Executive Yuan was hit by an unexpected power outage Friday morning, leaving the buildings in the dark for about 40 minutes. KMT lawmakers criticized the government, saying the incident exposed a lack of resilience. But the Executive Yuan said the outage was caused by aging equipment, with funding already budgeted for upgrades. Officials urged lawmakers to pass the central government’s budget to ensure normal operations. Let’s hear more.

This is the same Executive Yuan that likes to promote this so-called urban resilience, which as the incident has shown, has major gaps.

The Executive Yuan complex experienced a power outage due to a malfunction in the high-voltage circuit breaker system, which had been in use for more than 30 years, according to an inspection conducted late last year. We have already budgeted for their replacement and hope the Legislative Yuan can complete its review of this year’s central government budget as soon as possible to support the upgrading of these facilities.

The Legislative Yuan was scheduled to vote Friday on the remaining items in this year’s central government budget. Of the 658 proposals still pending, 317 involve general expenditures, including the Presidential Office’s confidential affairs budget and media and publicity funding for government agencies. But with lawmakers unable to reach a consensus, those items have been put on hold. The Ministry of Culture is also facing potential cuts and freezes totaling NT$1 billion, including funding for Taiwan’s Public Television Service. The DPP has slammed the opposition-controlled legislature, with spokesperson Lin Chu-yin calling this year’s budget review the most absurd in history. She accused the opposition of dragging the process into August, saying the delay is seriously affecting the review of both current and upcoming budgets.
