Of all the dangerous things you can do at the beach, stone skipping is at the top of the list in Yilan. A group of kids at Su’ao’s Tofu Cape got caught skipping stones into the water, despite there being people swimming in the sea. Some people tried to stop them, but their parents fought back, arguing that it was OK. The incident got so big that even the Yilan County Government has weighed in on the legality of the matter. Let’s hear more.
Mr. Chang
Witness
They’re skipping stones where there’s people. It’s so dangerous.
Member of public
Confused
It’s a bit contradictory. It’s normal to skip stones in such a place.
Chih Teng-lian
Yilan Business and Tourism Department
This behavior violates Article 11, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 11 of Yilan’s park management regulations, which prohibits activities that endanger the personal safety of visitors.
The county government says skipping stones is not allowed in areas designated for water activities. So if you want to avoid a fine of up to NT$6,000, it’s best to go stone skipping somewhere else. Officials say they will increase patrols to stop this highly dangerous and inconsiderate behavior.
