Driver protests fine for swerving to avoid pedestrian on narrow roadway

Shunxing Street in Taichung’s Beitun District is notoriously narrow and always has cars parked along the side, forcing pedestrians to walk on the roadway. To keep a safe distance, one driver had to move toward the center and accidentally touched the median line, only to be reported by a trailing vehicle.
Lines of cars are parked on either side of this roadway, forcing pedestrians to walk out into the street. That’s the source of the problem.
This driver accidentally touched the center line while trying to give space for a pedestrian, resulting in a ticket.

Shunxing Street is only about 10 meters wide, but both sides are packed with cars. There’s only around 5 or 6 meters of usable roadway. To avoid a pedestrian, I had to get close to the median line and the car behind me took a photo.
Shunxing Street in Taichung’s Beitun District isn’t that wide to begin with. But with cars parked on either side, it’s difficult to avoid crossing over into the middle.

Since Dung-Guang Elementary is back there, there’s usually a lot of traffic on this road in the morning.
On a visit to this stretch of road, we found that nearly every vehicle had the same issue. To avoid driving too close to the parked cars, every one touched or crossed the yellow line.

Most residents around here say this road is hard to navigate. You almost always have to drive on the double yellow.
With no sidewalk, pedestrians are forced out into the road. To avoid causing an accident, cars have to drive in the center, even though they might get fined. Police said anyone can file an appeal if they think they were ticketed inappropriately.

This stretch of road is less than 9 meters wide. To maintain enough space, we will adjust the red lines along the edge of the road to align with the center yellow line.
The Taichung transportation bureau said it would look into improving the road to make sure that vehicles and pedestrians don’t have to compete for space.

台中北屯區順興街，道路狹窄，兩側又長期停滿車輛，行人被迫走上車道，就有駕駛為了和行人保持安全距離，車子往中線靠，不慎壓到雙黃線，沒想到卻遭後車檢舉。
道路兩旁，停滿車子，行人經過得再往外靠，不過這時候問題來了。
就有駕駛，為了不要靠行人太近，不小心壓到雙黃線，結果被後車檢舉。

“順興街的路寬大概十公尺，但是兩旁都停滿了車輛，所以實際可用路面寬度，大概剩下五、六公尺，為了要閃避行人，因為路太小我就跨越到中線，就被後車拍照。”
地點就在台中北屯區順興路，原本就不寬敞的道路，兩旁再停滿車子，駕駛一不小心就壓線。

“因為後面那邊有一個東光國小，早上這一條路的車流量應該是滿大的。”
實際回現場，幾乎每台車行經這條順興路，都遇到同樣問題。為了不靠路邊車輛太近，車身不自覺壓到甚至跨越雙黃線。

“這邊的居民大部分都會反應說，路口不好行駛，很容易壓到雙黃線。”
行人無路可走，只能被迫走上車道，駕駛為了避免意外，只好將車輛往中線靠。但這樣一來，又可能吃上罰單，警方表示，民眾若對罰單有疑慮，可以提出申訴。

“該路段路寬不足九公尺，為維持車道通行寬度，將調整路側紅線與雙黃線長度一致。”
台中市交通局也會研議改善方案，希望能徹底解決人車爭道亂象。
