Kaohsiung produces traffic safety picture book from students’ perspectives

The Kaohsiung City Transportation Bureau has launched a new traffic safety book for junior high students, hoping this will instill traffic awareness in Taiwanese at a young age. It’s all based on the students’ observations of traffic on their daily commute to school. Let’s find out more.
The Kaohsiung City Government invited picture book author Li Chin-lun and aesthetic education specialist Liao Hui-lan to guide students from Kaohsiung Municipal Fongshan Junior High School to transform their everyday traffic experiences on their commute into relatable picture book stories.

First, we conduct field research with the students to gather a collection of their creative materials. I then adapt this material and compose it into a picture book.
In the picture book, whether it’s the story arrangement, narrative, or hand-drawn illustrations, everything is presented from the perspective of junior high school students observing their commuting environment. Regardless of age, anyone can easily understand how to follow road safety concepts through simple pictures and text.

Transportation isn’t just about infrastructure or regulation—more importantly, it must be rooted in our mindset and safety education needs to start at a young age
More importantly, the book also incorporates traffic safety knowledge such as stopping and waiting for pedestrians and prohibiting scooters from riding on sidewalks, making traffic safety not just about rules and regulations, but rather safety knowledge that can be practically applied.

The city government will also continuously work hard, and we will allocate related budgets. We also hope to find a different school every year, and we even want high school students to participate in the production of these picture books.
For three consecutive years, the city government has launched traffic safety picture books, hoping to promote traffic safety awareness from an early age through reading. This also influences parents and older adults who are helping their kids, extending coverage across multi-generational households, so that they can jointly create a more child-friendly traffic environment.

國中生畫出安全感! 高雄交安繪本推廣守護用路安全

高雄市交通局攜手市立圖書館、繪本作家，跨界合作，推出全新交通安全繪本，請來鳳山國中九年級學生共同製作，從孩子的視角，把日常通學路的交通觀察，轉化為繪本故事，希望藉由閱讀，讓交通安全觀念，從小扎根，守護用路安全。
高雄市府請來繪本作家李瑾倫，以及美感教育工作者廖蕙蘭，帶著鳳山國中學生，把日常上課路，會碰到的交通大小事，轉化成貼近生活的繪本故事。

“先會經過跟學校學生的田調，所以我們會有一批他們的創作素材，再由我來轉譯這些內容，然後把它構成一本繪本。”
繪本中，不管是故事編排、鋪陳，還是手繪圖畫，都以國中生視角，觀察通學環境，不分年齡，都能透過簡單圖文，了解如何遵守交通安全觀念。

“因為交通其實不只是硬體的實施，或者是管制，更關鍵的是要扎根於我們自己的心裡，那麼甚至我們的知識也要從小做起。”
更重要的是，書中還融入停等行人、機車不能行駛在人行道等交通知識，讓交通安全不再只是法條，而是能實際運用的安全知識。

“市政府也會努力的、持續的，而且會自己也編列預算。我們也會希望每一年都找不同的學校，我們甚至是找高中生也來參與來製作這些繪本。”
市府連續三年推出交通安全繪本，期盼透過閱讀推廣，讓交通安全觀念，從小扎根，進而影響父母跟長輩，把安全年齡層覆蓋到家庭，共同打造對孩子更友善的交通環境。
