A temple in Taichung’s Shalu District recently became the site of a fish massacre. A man was seen on CCTV dumping an entire container of crystal air freshener beads into the temple’s pond. Thinking it was food, the koi in the pond scrambled to eat them, but the expanding toxic beads caused the fish to die one after another. Irate, the temple management pressed charges, and the man was sentenced to 40 days in prison along with a NT$200,000 fine.

There’s no sense of responsibility to others. He harmed small animals. You shouldn’t dump an unknown substance into someone else’s fish pond.
The pond is behind this temple in Taichung’s Shalu District. It used to have 10 German and 10 Japanese koi, worth around NT$50,000. But after meticulously caring for the fish for over two years, at the end of last year, they all died off at once. A review of the CCTV footage revealed the culprit.
- Did he ever compensate you?
- No. He was adamant in saying he was in a bad state and wouldn’t pay. He said he’d rather commute his sentence to a fine or go to prison.
The temple representative said they don’t know the man, but suspect he was disturbed and lashed out at random. The entire pond was contaminated by the poison and needed to be thoroughly cleaned before it could hold fish again.

After the incident, we tried raising another batch, but the same thing happened and they all died off. We asked an expert and they told us we had to buy disinfectant and clean the pond five times, drain all the water, let it dry for about 10 days, and then refill it.
The court determined that the man violated the Animal Protection Act, and sentenced him to 40 days in prison along with a NT$200,000 fine. The ruling is subject to appeal.

台中沙鹿一間宮廟，發生錦鯉集體暴斃案件!一名男子，竟把含有水晶寶寶的芳香劑，整盒倒進魚池，池中錦鯉以為是飼料，搶著吃，膨脹的水晶寶寶加上化學藥劑，導致錦鯉陸續死亡，廟方憤而提告，男子遭判拘役40天、併科罰金20萬元。
男子走到魚池邊，從衣服口袋裡，掏出一盒水晶寶寶芳香劑，接著就把所有水晶寶寶，倒進魚池，鯉魚們以為是有人發飼料，開始躁動，接著男子轉頭就走，而這池錦鯉，在1周內陸續死亡。

鯉魚池位在台中沙鹿一間宮廟後方，池裡養了10尾德國錦鯉以及10尾日本錦鯉，市價大約5萬元，精心養育2年多，但去年底，錦鯉們卻集體暴斃，一調監視器才發現，原來是有人倒了一整盒水晶寶寶芳香劑餵魚。

-沒有，他應該堅決說，他心情不好他不賠償，他寧願易科罰金，或者是去關都可以
廟方表示，與這名男子並不認識，疑似心情不好，才隨機犯案，現在整個魚池受汙染，得整個大清理，才能再養魚。

法官認定，這名男子違反動保法，判他拘役40天併科罰金20萬元，全案還可上訴。
