1,000+ worshippers flock to temple to eat instant noodles

A meal always tastes better with good company. And so, eating instant noodles with 1,000 other people, must be a delightful dining experience. That was exactly the point of a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at Shilong Temple in Nantou. Hundreds of people flocked from far and wide to eat noodles together, and also celebrate the birthday of the Land God.

Slurping and munching sounds fill Shilong Temple in Nantou’s Zhongliao Township, as a huge crowd of worshippers tuck into a bowl of piping-hot instant noodles.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, is also the birthday of the Land God. At this temple, the B-day bash involves getting more than 1,000 people to eat instant noodles together and pray for blessings. It’s popular with everyone.

- I saw the event online and decided to come. I usually come here to pray.
- What do you think about everyone eating instant noodles together?
- It’s quite special. They smell good and taste yummier.

- I came from Changhua.
- How was the traffic on the way?
- We set off at 7, so it was alright.

The temple prepared 1,200 bowl-and-chopstick sets, free for participants to take home as a memento. Worshippers come from all over Taiwan.
