Fair weather and mostly clear skies expected islandwide over Moon Festival

Good weather islandwide is expected through the entire Mid-Autumn Festival long weekend. Unexpectedly, that’s in part thanks to Tropical Storm Surigae, which is veering northward to the east of Taiwan. Over the coming week, it’s set to be sunny with some clouds all around the island, with some scattered afternoon showers in windward and mountainous areas. The typhoon’s periphery and the dry air for the north are bringing temperatures up, making for an especially sweltering Indian summer. Let’s hear more.

Through the end of September, it will be warm and hot all over Taiwan, with daytime highs reaching 33 to 34°C. Temperatures could be even higher inland and near mountains in Central and Southern Taiwan. From Taoyuan to Taichung and in Central Taiwan, the cloud cover will be minimal, with ideal conditions to view the moon. In the South, the cloud cover should dissipate at night.

Though some cloud cover is expected in Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung, the chances of seeing the moon are pretty good. But if you’re hoping to see the actual full moon on the date of the Moon Festival, you might be disappointed this year. Due to the time offset between the lunar cycles and the traditional lunisolar calendar, the moon won’t be full until two days later, on Sept. 27, specifically, at 12:49 am. Luckily, the difference is barely perceptible to the naked eye, so there’s no need to change any plans you may have made.
