Market for camping gear booming as Taiwan takes to the great outdoors

Camping is the latest global trend to take Taiwan by storm. Since COVID hit, spending a vacation under the starry sky is more attractive than ever. But for lots of people, managing the logistics is a real challenge. Should you go with a tent? What about an awning to attach to your vehicle? Some people invest in campervans, or even fully-fledged caravans. We take a look at the options.

The pandemic is easing, and it’s summer. In Taiwan, it is usually very cool if you head up to high altitudes in the evening. So because of that, camping is getting very popular. Our profits have risen accordingly by about 10% to 20%.

My friend has started it recently, they also just got into it. A campervan awning is better – it’s faster and more convenient.
A tent is the classic camping kit. But caravans and campervans are all the rage now. One popular choice is a caravan or trailer imported from abroad. They have full bathroom facilities inside. It’s like a tiny hotel on wheels. One of these can cost NT$3 million. Other people take a van and remodel it into a campervan. But refitting the vehicle will set you back NT$1 million at least. Then there are awnings. They can be fitted to any kind of vehicle, and with all the accessories included, you won’t spend more than NT$100,000. That’s the most economical option.

It doesn’t take a lot to get into it. You only need to spend NT$100,000 or NT$150,000. The other thing is it doesn’t matter much what make your car is. Almost 80% of the vehicles in Taiwan are suitable. In the north, you could go to Jinshan or Sanxia districts. If you’re going further south, you can think about Jianshi or Wufeng townships in Hsinchu or Tai’an Township in Miaoli.
As camping continues to gain popularity, the market for camping gear is booming. If you’d like to get into camping on a budget, starting with a car and a tent is the first choice.

很多人愛露營，除了傳統的帳篷露營，現在不少人瘋"車頂帳"，因為和一台要價300萬的露營車相比，車頂帳入手門檻低，配備只要10萬能搞定，業者就觀察到，近期因為疫情趨緩，加上暑假到來，露營的人可是整整多了一成，這些露營車到底有多特別？一起來看看。

"要搭起像這樣子的車頂帳，其實不到兩分鐘就可以完成，而且車上還有睡袋還有電風扇。"
睡覺的帳篷有了，要廚房、客廳，後車廂化身百寶袋，桌椅、爐具通通不是問題。近期台灣露營的人口明顯增加，業者很有感。

"疫情比較舒緩，然後再來就是夏天，其實在台灣你往高海拔地方跑的話，大概晚上都很涼快，所以露營也有跟著比較盛行，然後相對的話，大概有提高一到兩成的業績。"

除了傳統搭帳篷，全台吹起露營車熱潮，常見的有全車進口露營車或拖車，裡頭有完整衛浴設備，彷彿像移動式旅店，只是一台要價約300萬元，還有民眾自行改裝貨車，改一台至少也要百萬起跳，不過車頂帳不限車型都能加裝，另外再買配備10萬元就能搞定，入手相對便宜。

"入門的門檻比較低，大概十幾萬就解決了。再來就是它比較不限車型，台灣的話大概近八成的車都可以用。北部的話就金山或三峽，那如果再往中南部跑一點的話，就可以考慮新竹尖石、五峰，或是苗栗的泰安。"
露營人口成長，露營配備也跟著發燒，想要最省錢的方式參與露營，用一台車就走遍台灣。
