The Ministry of Education has announced new laxer COVID rules for the new school year, which is just around the corner. For the first two weeks of the new term, class will be called off if just one student or teacher tests positive for the disease. That will change starting Sept. 12. From then on, students who test positive will have to do home quarantine for seven days, after which they can return to school. The student’s teachers and classmates will be able to continue on with class as normal, as long as they test negative in a rapid test. The new rules will apply to all schools at the high school level and below. Let’s hear from the minister of education.
Pan Wen-chung
Minister of education
Last school term, we delivered about 600,000 rapid tests to schools every week. But in this coming semester, we will administer about 800,000 rapid tests to all schools and preschools. That is 800,000 weekly tests. Schools will have inventory for 50% of students, up from the current 30%.

Officials say the decision was reached after a thorough assessment of Taiwan’s COVID situation and medical resources.
