Xiamen’s drone ban may be in response to recent drone shooting: DPP legislator

2022-09-04

Xiamen’s Public Security Bureau has announced that drones and other light aircraft will not be allowed to take off without authorization between Sept. 3 and 12. The announcement from the southeastern Chinese city comes after Taiwan’s Kinmen Defense Command shot down a Chinese civilian drone in its airspace last week. A DPP legislator says the announcement shows that Beijing is trying to dial down cross-strait tensions.

Chao Tien-lin
DPP lawmaker
They’re using an international conference as the reason for banning drone flights. First of all, this may be an attempt to deescalate the recent conflict. Second, this shows that they are worried about being attacked. Shooting down drones sent by China is the correct move. On one hand, we want to tell China that we won’t let them take a step inside our borders. On the other hand, we have to let both domestic and international communities know that we have the ability and determination to defend ourselves.

Continued harassment from Chinese drones over Kinmen of late has forced the Taiwan military to respond with action. In a video release by the army, an anti-drone rifle is shown being used alongside the T-91 assault rifle. The army seems determined to prevent Beijing from taking advantage of ambiguous military situations created by drone incursions.
