Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is scheduled to visit Washington on Jan. 13, where he will meet with U.S. President Joe Biden. A Japanese media outlet is now reporting that the two sides are planning to issue a joint statement after the summit that will stress the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, among other topics.

The White House has already disclosed topics for discussion between the two world leaders. Aside from the modernization of the U.S.-Japan Alliance, North Korea’s missile testing and the Russo-Ukrainian war, the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait will also be included. The Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun has quoted a Japanese government source as saying that the two sides will issue a joint statement after the talks that will focus on security assurances. This will also include more steps to deepen the U.S.-Japan Alliance and strengthen their strategic partnership for a free and open Indo-Pacific. The statement will also reaffirm the application of the Japan-U.S. security treaty to the contested Diaoyutai islands.
