Paraguayan presidential candidate vows to sever ties with Taiwan if elected

2023-01-10

Taiwan’s last remaining diplomatic ally in South America, Paraguay is set to hold a presidential election in April, which could decide the future of its ties with Taiwan. Opposition candidate, Efrain Alegre recently announced that his party would cut ties with Taiwan to establish ties with China if elected.

A report from Japan’s NHK says that Central and South America had until recently been regarded as the U.S.’ “backyard.” However, nowadays, countries in the area are veering away from the U.S. to align closer to China. The report adds that, in contrast, pushback against China in other areas of the world has injected vitality into Taiwan’s relations with the U.S. and Europe.
